Connor Beaton argues that regrets reveal what you actually want. He quotes Christopher Hitchens on choosing your regrets, saying every choice has payoffs and consequences. The real waste is ignoring the lessons or not pursuing the unlived desires your regrets point to.

Maybe you screwed up all the way through your 20s. Good. I love the Christopher Hitchens quote where he says choose your regrets. You either lived a whole bunch and learned a ton of lessons or you didn't live at all. That should inform you of the life that you want to live. The unlived expectations, the unlived adventures, the unlived desires that are all percolating up now from your unconscious into your psyche, telling you who who you ultimately want to be, the dreams that you want to pursue, the things that you want to build, the places you want to go and see and who you want to spend time with. Regret is something that you're inevitably going to have to choose. There is a payoff and a consequence for absolutely every decision and choice that you make. The real waste is by not pursuing those things, by not implementing some of the things that you either Learned in your 20s or that you feel like you missed out on.
