A short talk by Connor Beaton arguing that men tend toward increasing rigidity as they age and proposing reframing disciplined practices as rituals — devotionary acts that balance masculine discipline with feminine surrender — to help loosen rigid identity, beliefs, and perspectives.
As men, our natural predilection is actually to be quite rigid.
Right? If you notice, most men, as they get older, they get more and more rigid, right? If left to their own devices, they get more and more rigid. Their beliefs become more rigid, their opinions become more rigid, their perspectives become more rigid. Who they are as an identity often becomes more rigid. So I just want you guys to try and commit to looking at some of your practices as a ritual rather than something that you are like a daily habit that you're trying to make. For me, rituals are a devotionary practice, right? And there's a lot in here. But I think one of the things I've started to notice for a lot of men is that we are trying to be more disciplined. And yet we come at it from this very attack oriented perspective. And we often miss out on the devotionary aspect of a ritual, right? A ritual is meant to be something where you are.
Where you are connecting with the duality, right? You're connecting with the masculine because you have discipline in doing it. You're also connecting with the feminine because it is a devotionary practice, right? In some ways you are surrendering. In some ways you are being devotional to the self or being devotional to the practice, or being devotional to that breaking loose of the rigidity within you.
