Why You Feel So Stuck (And What To Do)

In this motivational monologue, Connor Beaton explains why many people feel trapped in self‑sabotaging cycles and offers a clear framework for breaking free. He first debunks the common belief that feeling stuck means you are out of control, labeling it a false narrative the brain tells to keep you in familiar, safe patterns. He describes the brain and nervous system as pattern‑recognition machines that gravitate toward known behaviors, equating familiarity with safety, which leads to repeated sabotage. To escape, Beaton argues you must consciously venture into unknown territory, accepting the discomfort and uncertainty that comes with new habits or decisions. He then shifts focus from “doing more” to “letting go” of specific beliefs, actions, or self‑perceptions that keep you stuck, using analogies such as quicksand and a dog on a nail to illustrate the counter‑intuitive need to release rather than struggle. Finally, he introduces his personal motto, “I let change change me,” emphasizing surrender to change rather than trying to force it, and provides practical self‑reflection steps: write down what you’re holding onto, admit uncomfortable truths, and notice where change is already trying to act in your life. The talk ends with a call to comment and apply these insights.

All right, team, welcome back. Are you stuck? Are you constantly sabotaging? Do you have this same pattern that shows up over and over and over again and you can't seem to break out of this cycle? Well, you're probably not alone. I talk to so many people that deal with the exact same issue, and I'm here to explain to you very clearly and give you very clear steps and direction that you can take to understand why you can't seem to let go of that sabotage pattern and what you can start to do today in order to overcome it. So first and foremost, let's talk about the biggest misconception with self-sabotage. The biggest misconception about sabotage and being stuck is that you feel out of control, right? This is false. This is wrong. This is a lie that your brain tells you to keep you stuck and to keep you in that sabotaging behavior. Here is a simple truth about your brain and your nervous system that you need to know in order to break free from this cycle. The truth is that your brain and your nervous system want to keep you in a familiar state. Your brain is a pattern recognition machine, and it wants to move you towards decisions, actions, choices that are known to it, that are familiar to it. And so the reason why you continually feel stuck is that usually your brain is moving you towards sabotaging behaviors, behaviors that keep you stuck, because that's what it knows. That's what it feels familiar with. And your brain equates familiarity with safety, with ease, with comfort. It's almost like one of those games. I don't know if you ever played Doom, but one of those video games where as you explore the map, as you explore the territory, the map becomes revealed. Right. And so you have to walk around and explore as much of the map as possible in order for the map to reveal itself. Well, your brain doesn't like that. Your brain, if left to its own devices, would just continually explore the territory that you have already been in. And this is what keeps you stuck. It just wants to keep going back into the exact same decisions, choices, actions that it already knows. And so you keep looking in the exact same rooms that you've already been in for different advice, for a different outcome, for a different experience. And so the truth is that if you want to get unstuck, if you want to stop sabotaging, you have to be willing to do one thing, and that is venture into unknown territory. You have to be willing to expose yourself and take the risk consciously to move into the unknown. The new behavior that you want, the new habit, the new action, the new decision, the new conversation is going to feel like a threat to your brain, to your body, to your nervous system. And it is going to want to avoid that because it cannot predict the outcome of what will happen. So if you're trying to institute a new morning routine, a new workout routine, if you're trying to, you know, cull out the late-night eating habits, the, you know, bag of potato chips or ice cream or popcorn, but you're used to doing that every single night and you're stuck with this same shitty behavior that you hate and you don't like and does not feel good, The truth is that your brain is going to try and incentivize you towards staying in that familiar pattern. So you're gonna have to risk going into the unknown. You're gonna have to remind yourself, I do not know how I'm going to feel. I do not know what the outcome is going to be. I'm not sure what's going to happen. I'm not sure how to do this. You have to consciously become aware that you are incompetent, that you are lacking competency and skill and understanding of this behavior, action, decision, choice, conversation that you are wanting to have because it is foreign. The second thing that I want you to know that will help you to take action on moving out of a stuck state, moving out of sabotage, is that there is always, always something for you to let go of. The misconception of being stuck and of sabotage is that there's something that you need to do. I have to do something to get unstuck. And what ends up happening for people is that they scramble around endlessly for hours, days, weeks, months, sometimes even years, trying to figure out what is it that I need to do? I need to work harder. I need to perform better. I need to be more perfect in this way. And what ends up happening is you do and do and do and do, and you are still stuck. Why? Because it's not something that you need to do. It's something that you need to let go of. It is an action, a behavior, a belief, a self-perception that needs to be let go of in order to get unstuck, right? Think about quicksand. What's the first thing that people tell you if you've ever learned about like, oh, if you're ever in quicksand, Don't do this. Don't thrash around wildly trying to do something and get unstuck because you will sink deeper. Get slow, get calm, get still, and start to release and let go of the musculature so that you can begin to pull yourself out, right? So we have to do the inverse of what our brain, what our system is trying to convince us to do. So what I encourage every single person to do is to look at their life and say, what are the things I know I need to let go of in order to get unstuck? What are the things I need to let go of and that I need to stop doing in order to get unstuck and quit the sabotage cycle? So it's not that you need to do something differently specifically, It's that you need to let go of something, a belief, an action, a self-perspective that is no longer serving you, that's keeping you in place. Remember, and this is another analogy that I found very, very helpful. There is a sort of analogy or a story of a postman continually coming to this house, and there's an old man sitting in a rocking chair on the porch, and beside the old man is a dog. Whenever the postman would walk up, the dog would be whimpering and be hurt. And the postman came day after day, and finally he asked the old man in the rocking chair, he said, "That dog seems to be in pain." And he says, "He is." And he said, "Well, how come?" And he said, "Well, he's laying on a nail." And the postman looked confused and he was like, "Well, when is he gonna get off the nail? Why is he doing that?" And the old man says, "He'll get off the nail when it becomes painful enough, AKA he will let go of the pain. He will let go of the thing that's causing him pain when it becomes painful enough. So we have to be willing to let go. For me, getting unstuck, for me, getting unstuck and letting go of sabotage is a process of surrendering to a truth that is already mine. Right in front of you, okay? I'm gonna say that again. Getting unstuck and letting go of a sabotage behavior is a process of surrendering to a truth that is already right in front of you. You have to surrender to the truth that's already right in front of you and let go of the thing that is weighing you down. So take an item, like just write down a few things. What am I holding onto? What am I unwilling to let go of? What truth do I know is true that I've not been willing to admit? Right? And that might be, I hate myself. I don't actually want this new routine. I'm holding on to this, you know, this shame belief that I'm a piece of crap and that I'll never be able to quit the late night snacks, or I'll never, you know, I'm holding on to this belief that I'll never be able to have the morning routine, whatever it is. Start to really take a look at what specifically, what truth specifically do you need to admit in order to have change and surrender happen to get unstuck. And finally, use this motto, okay? This is the last piece that I'll give you. Use this motto, I let change change me. I let change change me. You do not have to do change. You, it's not something that you have to do. This is the big misconception. Men psychologically turn themselves into pretzels because when they think about changing, when they think about producing different results in their life, they try and attack it as something that they have to do. They try and systematize it. And when it comes to emotional and psychological change, that is not the case. It doesn't work the same as pulling some levers in your business and producing a different product. It is not the same thing. We have to allow change to change us. Change and life is already trying to change you. The truth is that most men are staying stuck like that dog on the nail because they are refusing to listen to the truth of their emotional data, the emotional information that is speaking to them already, that is already trying to inform you of the change that is trying to happen in your life. Change is a happening. It is something that you can do, and it is also something that is done to you. It is something that naturally and organically happens to you in your life. And the majority of you guys are stuck, not because you're ineffective at making the change happen, but because you are unwilling and fucking terrified to allow change to happen to you in your life. Life is change. Life is always moving. Entropy is always happening. Things are always changing. Every single cell in your body will change in the next 7 years. You have to work really goddamn hard to stay stuck, okay? You actually have to work hard to stay in the same place, to have things stay the same. That takes effort. That takes work. So ask yourself, where specifically am I not allowing change to happen? What is the change that is already trying to happen in my life? How is life already trying to change me and how am I resisting the change that is being asked of me in my life. And that might mean that you have known for weeks that you should get up at 6:00 AM, but you resist it. You resist it because the truth is you don't want to actually get up earlier in the morning and go do a routine and go do a workout. You are not allowing the change to happen in your life. You are rejecting it. You are resisting it. You are holding on to this old belief system and structure, and you are not allowing the change to actually take place in your life. And so use my motto. I used this for years. I still use it. I still try and, you know, whenever something comes up and I'm just like, man, 'cause sometimes change is big. Sometimes change shows up and it's like, ooh, that's terrifying. I don't know if I'm ready for that. Let change change you. That's my motto. I let change change me. I don't need to do change. I need to allow change to happen, to come through me, to move through me, to affect me, to take hold of me, to inform me. And my job is to listen to the change that life, business, friendship, relationship, are asking of me and allow for that change to take place? Because 9 times out of 10, especially with men, we are the ones rejecting change. Change shows up and we say, "Access denied." Change shows up and you, I want to get up at 6 o'clock in the morning and go, "Nope, access denied. I'm not going to allow that. I'm going to continue running this bullshit story that I'm not somebody that can get up in the morning and go blah, blah, blah." And we come up with all the intellectual, highly intelligent excuses that allow us to stay stuck holding onto, I'm not gonna let change happen, I refuse to let it happen. Let change change you. All right, comment below, let me know what you think about this, and I hope that you found something valuable in it. Let change happen in your life. Notice, be very, very aware, where is change trying to change me? What is already trying to change in my life? That I simply need to allow and surrender to. All right, see you next time.
