When you're out of position on a par-4, treat it like a par-5: lay up to a comfortable distance, get your next shot on the green, and accept a bogey. Don't try to over-compensate and compound the mistake.

If you're ever out of position on a par 4, it's important to understand that once you're out of position, bogey is essentially a par, even if you're on the PGA Tour. So when you're out of position, just think about it like a par 5. What would you do if you're on a par 5? You're probably going to lay up to a decent number, try and hit your next shot on the green. If you can make your one putt, great. If you two putt, it's not really a big deal. So instead of compounding a mistake, make sure that when you get out of position, just get back into position. It's that easy.
