Setting Your Long Term Target 1

Connor Stirling Peterson shows how to set scoring targets for college golf recruitment using a spreadsheet and Junior Golf Scoreboard data. Pull the scoring differentials from programs you want to attend, average them, and use that number as your goal. If you're undecided, use minus-2 as a fallback.

All right, congrats on making it this far into the goal section. I say congratulations because again, it would surprise you how many people sign up for something like this and then don't watch any of the videos. It is boggling to me. So I'm glad you're actually here and going through this material. Let's go ahead and jump into it. So what you're seeing, you should have gotten access to, uh, through the Google Drive. If you haven't filled out your onboarding form yet, that's how I'm going to get this to you. So if you've got a DM sitting in your inbox from me, fill out the onboarding form. Also get access to your circles that way, but it will have access to this document. And so this is the first tab that we're going to see here, and this is important. This is setting your goals. It's important that we have the framework of where we're trying to get to. That way we alleviate all the anxiety of, I just need to do more, I need to do more stuff, from not paying attention, right? We can get into this cycle where we're so anxious about getting stuff done that we don't slow down and actually look at like what are the pieces on the chessboard and what are we actually trying to do. So what you want to do here is note down the college programs that you're interested in. I'll tell you guys, if you guys are unsure, right, if you just want to play Division I golf, then I'll tell you what to do next once we get to the next sheet. But for those of you who have a specific program in mind, or maybe a set of programs like I have in this example, just go ahead and pick those out. So what you want to do is just label out those programs, and then we're going to go over to Junior Golf Scoreboard. We're going to go to Rankings and Honors, College Signings, and then we're going to look at the current year or a year back. We're going to filter by the particular program that you're interested in, and we're going to go down. And so I'm just going to do this for Auburn as an example. We're going to go down here, we're going to look at Auburn and say, okay, we've got a negative 6.52, we've got a negative 8.06, and we've got a negative 5.16 as an example. So let's just go in here, Auburn. So you got negative 6 point— what was it— 6.52, got a negative 8.06. and we've got a negative 5.16. Okay, let's say I also wanted to do this for UCLA. So for UCLA, negative 6.69, and we've got a negative 4.22. Okay, And I'm going to come up with one more program that I want to do this for. So let's go in here and say Stanford. All right. Just got to go find Stanford here at -7.42, 2, and then -3.07. All right, perfect. Now if you do more than this, right, then what you're just going to do is you're going to click here, right-click, add one row below, and then just put in the next program. And then we're just going to go ahead and drag this box down here, right? So you're going to put in whatever values you'd want to have there. Okay, so that's what you do. Let me go ahead and delete this row here. Cool. So what we have here is we have the average of each one of these, right? So if you're looking at particular programs, you want to go to Auburn based on this past year, in this case you need a scoring differential of -6.58. Now this is helpful if you have a collection of programs, right? Because what we've got at the bottom here is we've got the collective average for all of those programs. So you see this number right here in this next sheet, this goal pacing sheet, it's going to get imported as your particular goal here. Okay. And so it's super, super crucial that you go through this exercise to really understand like, hey, what is my target? And then in the next video, I'll walk you through how to set up this goal pacing sheet. Now, if you're in a situation where you're just like, hey Connor, I just want to play individual golf, I don't know where specifically I want to play. Then all you want to do here is just note in -2 as your particular target here. Again, that'll get populated into the next sheet. That's kind of just my default placeholder. If you say, hey, I want to play Division 1 golf, technically you could still make it happen with a little bit less than that, but I want to make sure that you're overshooting your target rather than undershooting your target. So if you want to do that, that's great. Otherwise, I really encourage you to actually go through this, this legwork, and actually see where the program is that you want to get recruited by, or the set of programs, and then figure out an actual realistic target for them. And this can update year over year over year as things change, as your game develops, and maybe your expectations change as well. So go through this exercise, and if you have any trouble with it, go ahead, shoot me a DM, we'll get it sorted out.
