How I Update A Practice Plan

Connor Stirling Peterson shows how to build a junior golfer's practice plan from tournament data. He pulls metrics like 3-putting percentage and greens-in-regulation, calculates potential shot gains, and sets a three-month target of 1.5 shots improvement. The plan adapts around the player's basketball season and cycles through data review, goal setting, and re-evaluation.

What's going on guys? In today's video, I'm going to be covering how I update a practice plan for a player. So if you're new to the channel, um, I go— hey, what's going on guys? So in this video, I'm going to be going over my process for updating a practice plan for one of my students that I'm going to be getting on a coaching call with a little bit later this day. and I think it would be valuable for you guys to see how I make those adjustments and kind of how I, you know, how my method kind of works over a long period of time. In the prior videos in this series, I've gone over kind of the initial kind of logging that data, bringing it in, building out that initial practice plan. But I thought it would be helpful for you guys to just kind of like see kind of the long-term development here of what I'm looking at when I'm working with a player and how that actually translates into results over a period of time. Um, this is going to kind of like you know, round out this series. Um, who knows, maybe I will add stuff later, but I think this will give us a really kind of nice picture as far as like the rinse and repeat part of this entire process. Um, so I hope this video is helpful for you guys. Uh, but like I said, I'm just going through the student's numbers, um, and kind of what updates I want to make since, you know, the last time we talked, um, on specifically, you know, how his practice should be looking at, uh, was, you know, several months ago. So let's go ahead and dive right into it. But before Before we do that, if you guys are new to the channel, I cover how to develop to play Division 1 golf. So if you have a junior golfer and you— they want to do that, then this is the channel for you. Go ahead and subscribe. If you enjoy this video specifically, please leave a like. Really helps push the video out to more people in the YouTube algorithm. So anyway, let's go ahead and dive right into it. So as you guys saw in the prior ones, I'm going to have these two documents open, um, just kind of like as a foundation. And so I'm just going to go ahead and make a new entry here. And so instead of this being— let's knock this— so November 4th, 2020. All right, cool. So the first thing I want to do is I'm going to go ahead and update zero RAT. So 76.73. All right. So I know Right away we're moving in a good positive direction here. 6.46. All right, that's better. Ranking has moved a little bit up, which is good. Last 10 tournament round scoring average is 3.9, so that's improved. Our strokes gained -6.03. That's improved by almost 3 shots. So just to be clear, guys, um, a lot of the time when I'm kind of referencing my data, um, you know, I've said the average player improvement over the course of the year is 3.35 shots. Um, but in this player's case, you know, he's improved a significant amount, in part because, you know, he does a really great job of showing up to his, you know, weekly coaching calls, and he also just does a really great job of implementing, you know, what I'm talking about here. So I'll Obviously, you know, I just kind of give that as a range so you guys kind of understand how much you can expect to improve, um, following this process that I kind of outlined here. Um, but just as you guys can see, you know, he's improved essentially by 3 shots overall, um, over the last, you know, several months, even though the scoring average stayed relatively similar. He's actually playing longer golf courses, which is why you guys are seeing that. Let's go ahead and pull a practice here. See how that has changed. So we're at essentially 71.93, we're at 2.39. All right, and tournaments in the last 3 months, or I guess we'll grab practice first just because that's a little bit easier. 4. That's up a little bit, which is good to see. Old tournaments, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. All right, perfect. So we're going to clear these out. Next step is going to be pulling all of our hard data here. So we're going to go pull tournaments, last 10 rounds. We're going to look at greens regulation, 59.44, 59.44. So I'm just going to let you guys know, so this is the last time we did this, this is today, um, and this is just in his tournament tracking sheet so we can kind of see like round over round kind of like where are we at. This has dropped off, but like I said, he's playing longer golf courses, which is why you guys are really seeing that, that drop off there. Scrambling 50.8, so he's leaving himself in some pretty good positions based on those, those numbers there. 7.2, 3-putting has sharpened up a little bit. Birdie conversion rate 15. 8, 9. Conversion rate's pretty similar, that's good to see. And then off the tee, no penalties, so that's massive. Big, big improvement. So even though greens regulation dropped off, again, harder golf course, leaving ourselves in better spots, fewer 3-putts, and we cut out our penalties. Massive, massive difference there. So 3.9 is how we're performing here. All right, perfect. So we should be at 3.3, we're at 3.9, pretty close. But that is piece number 1 here. Now let's go ahead and pull out— actually, I'm not even gonna bother doing this because again, we've only played 4 rounds, so that's fine. So now I'm gonna go ahead and pull these numbers over into our scoring roadmap. Let's go to D8. 58, right? Is that right? 59? 59. Okay, 59.44, 44, 50.68, I think. Yep. All right, then 7.82 and 15.89, I want to say. Yes. All right, perfect. And then our scoring average is 75.9. Something's weird here. There we go. All right, perfect. So we should be about 75.3. Again, we're kind of like referencing this here, but all in all, this is pretty solid. So again, we're going to go through that process that you guys watched hopefully the other videos in this series, specifically in video number 1 where I go over analyzing the statistics. I'm looking at this player's stats and moving each one of these numbers as much as we can. Hopefully you guys are not catching too much of my son. Any of you guys, you know, obviously you guys are watching this, got young kids, so you guys know what that's like. So in this case, his thing that he needs to improve here primarily is 3-putting. So again, we're going to look at 3-putts, and we're at— where is that— 7.2%. And we want to bring this down to— what would it be? Maybe 3— is that math? No, we wanted this 2. If we bring it down to 3, which is about as low as we're realistically going to get that, we're going to go ahead and bring it to 3%, which is going to be worth about 0.8— 0.87. All right, perfect. So in the second one here, second biggest opportunity, we're going to go ahead and see what that is. So once again, same exercise. Pretty similar cadence here. All right, cool. 0.59, 0.37. Can't improve that. Pretty conversion rate. 0.53. Okay, cool. So if we can improve greens regulation, that's going to be our kind of next step here is bring that number back up. All right, perfect. So that's kind of our path forward here. So we're going to see— yep, all right, cool. PR, I'm going to go from 2 to 4.44, which is going to be worth 0.59 shots. All right, perfect. So what we can do here is we can add up these two kind of shot categories here to give us, you know, a number that, um, it's kind of like a pace, you know. If we execute on these things You know, that is what we're gonna be on pace for. So in this case, it's gonna be 1.46 shots would be our pace. So if we improve by that much over the next 3 months, we can accomplish these 2 objectives over the next 3 months, we're gonna improve by 1.49 shots or 46 shots. All right, cool. So we're gonna go through the observations and all that stuff again. Actually, I'll leave that there just so we can kind of, you know, see that as a reference point. But all right, last 10 rounds, what do you got here? All right, par 5 greens regulation can definitely improve that. So par 5 here can improve, right? That's 67%. All right, par 4 is probably a little tough. Par 3s are excellent. Alrighty then, so Next question I'm going to ask is, all right, with short game, where are we leaving ourselves? We're like, what's our on-green percentage here? 81% from 75 to 100 yards, 86% under 75 yards. So that tells me par 5 strategy can improve. We need to revisit that. 5 adjustment, better par 5 strategy. Hopefully that makes sense to all you guys. I know based on like these numbers, he's not laying up to, you know, 75 to 100 yards, so something's going off there. And we can catch essentially another green per round if we just make that one adjustment. So again, we have essentially accomplished this first goal. That's worth 0.6 shots probably on just a strategy adjustment. Obviously I'm gonna talk to him later. We're going to kind of sort that out. But again, it's just like the high-level part so you guys can kind of see the, that behind-the-scenes process here. So moving on to the next piece here, I want to take a look at putting since 3-putting is still a major thing. All right, cool, perfect. So once again, um, 3-putting, you know, we need to sharpen this, this kind of short putts up a little bit. See how our lag putting is. All right, so lag putting needs to sharpen up just a little bit, and our short putts— so lag putting needs to sharpen up, short putts need to sharpen up. And so in this particular player's case, I want to see his putting stroke just so I have a perspective on like you know, if, if we're missing this many putts, then there's something mechanically wrong in our putting, most likely, because I already know this player is doing a good job of doing his drills reliably. So again, this is kind of like there's something going on that's causing us a problem on the golf course. So that's kind of like how, how we're thinking through that. So I want to see putting stroke, and I also want to see, uh, his swing mechanics. Just to make sure that everything is solid. He's been playing longer golf courses, and this is from a prior one of our weekly coaching call conversations. He has been struggling with kind of his longer clubs. You know, he's hit his short clubs fairly well, but his longer stuff, he's struggling a little bit more to get the ball up in the air. So that's one of those cases where I'm going to want to see what he's working on with the swing and making sure that that's effective. So it's kind of like one of those areas where I might look at, say, hey, I want to see a player swing, not because it's like an ideological thing of like, I need to touch their golf swing, it's just If a player says to me, hey, I'm struggling to execute on these particular things because of this thing in my golf swing, I'm not just going to say, well, go talk to your swing coach. I'm going to say, all right, let's look at it and sort it out. Because to some degree, if their swing coach was doing what they needed to be doing, then that player probably wouldn't have that problem, or at least they would know what they need to do in order to improve that. They wouldn't be on a call with me saying, hey, I don't know what's going on. So hopefully that makes sense to everyone as well. That's really the only case that it makes sense to really step in and say, hey, let's let's adjust your swing. All right, so moving into the next piece here, very high, you know, fairways hit, so 72.89. Move that out of the way. So this is improved, 72.89. All right, so we're going to go ahead and push this up to 8 because that's kind of where we're performing at. Without, okay, so that's interesting, uh, 57.1. 57.14. All right, we're still going to be pushing that to 7. All right, so that hasn't changed that much here. Let's actually just see this real— yeah, it hasn't really gotten worse that much, but it's kind of interesting. Um, low far away hit for driver. All right, and then, all right, first of all, if you guys are enjoying this, this is helpful for you guys, please go ahead and leave a comment below. Let me know you guys actually do enjoy this and this is helpful. So let's just go ahead and continue here. So moving on to our approach numbers from 100 to 150, 74%, 55%. So you guys can see a lot of the time in the past he's kind of in this range, which is why his greens regulation was better initially. But again, this, this isn't just like, you know, hey, you know, we need to, you know, just push this number independent of everything else. Like, we're going to need to progress through tournaments, which is why video number 3 is so important, because it's this process of getting better at scoring while also making the golf courses more difficult. So in this case, you know, even though he's only really improved by like a shot over this period of time, his overall scoring Well, he's also improved by like 3 shots overall when you consider the difficulty of the golf courses. So that's just something to kind of be aware of. So 125 to 150, we're at 55%. That's probably where we're going to put the focus. 125 to 150, we're at 55%. Okay, 55.32. Go ahead, push this to 7 out of 10. Okay, I'll probably go ahead and go with 125, 135, 150, and then let's go ahead and pull the other numbers. 150, 175. All right, cool. So you guys probably remember that that number was down here. 33. Now it's 50%, so that's, you know, not too bad, but could still be improved. I want to see where this is at. Not too bad. All right, so I'm going to keep the focus here on these, these shorter numbers just to make sure, especially considering we're playing these longer par 4s. I want to make sure that he's really solid on this, and so that's where we're going to keep the focus. And this will work really well with the adjustments because those are like for those clubs are the ones he's going to be hitting. 6 out of 10, we're going to hit— since this prior one's, um, already 150, so we're going to go 160, 155, 65, and 75. So I'll have him hitting a knockdown here. All right, cool. For short game, not going to tweak much. You guys can kind of see where his short game is at, but overall pretty dang solid, great scrambling. So no real problems there, nothing really to tweak. Um, for these short putting as well, again, I don't want to tweak these drills because these drills are solid. I want to make sure that his putting stroke is good. Now if I look at his putting stroke, his putting stroke is fantastic. Then we're going to look at, okay, what are we doing strategically on our puts, um, like, are we aiming this ball outside of the hole? And we're going to kind of like work through that hierarchy there because once again, like, you know, to be, to be frank here, I'm probably actually going to move him in just a little bit. So go 3, 4, 5, just to make sure that that's super sharp. So that's kind of what that's going to look like. And then I also know that this player, he's going into basketball season right now, so we're going to have to be a little bit more strategic about when he's playing and practicing. Um, we're good, those reps in. So that's one of the things that we're going to go ahead and adjust on this call. But this is, this is super important because a lot of, you know, players are going to have like multiple sports that they're playing. And so knowing how to be in a position where you can update the practice so that they continue to improve even while they have those things going on is part of how we have this long-term progress in, you know, their overall ranking. Because, you know, all kids are going to do that stuff, and the reality is just we want to be consistently improving and we want to make sure that, you know, we're playing golf, our steps that we're putting in are moving us in a positive direction. Again, so you guys can kind of see the validation here on like the length of golf courses that he's playing. He's playing, you know, 5,800-yard golf courses. Now he's playing 6,700-yard golf courses because kind of like I mentioned the prior video, he's ramping himself up to be able to play in the, uh, the Junior All-Star stuff, especially in the springtime, because he's, he's 12 years old. So he's going to be in a position where come springtime, like, he's gonna be ready. He's gonna be fresh coming off basketball, so, you know, he's fine there. It might actually be 13 right now, but he's gonna be coming off basketball, he's gonna be fresh, and he's going to be in a position where, you know, come springtime, like, he's gonna be very, very competitive. So this is kind of important just for you guys to see the behind the scenes of this, is like, this isn't super glamorous, you know. It's like we're talking about fractions of a shot that we're improving over, you know, a period of time here. But again, if we look back on this, like, pretty much every single one of these has improved. So like driver improved, 3-wood and 5-wood, you know, those are a little suspect. You want to have a conversation about that, but they didn't just— they didn't get worse by a substantial amount. Um, both of these improved significantly, so I'm happy with that. And then the putting improved. So even though, like, yeah, I would like it to be better and I might adjust it, it overall did improve. So hopefully you guys can kind of see the full circle on this of, like, it's not just you know, hey, you know, here's the swing mechanics. It's not just, hey, here's this practice. It's not just, hey, here's a strategy, or so on and so forth. It's organically seeing that adjust and helping a player adjust that as they develop as a player, as they play more golf, as they play in different scenarios, and making sure that we have a clear picture on like, here are the things that are going to drive scoring, and then being able to drill down into like what's causing these numbers to be the way that they are, and then building our practice around that, and then adjusting that over time and being able to ask intelligent questions about, you know, whether the game's moving in a positive direction or not. So hopefully this video was helpful for you guys, just kind of round this out and kind of see what the long-term development looks like. If this is something you want me to help your junior golfer with, then there will be a link below this video where you can learn a little bit more about my process, um, kind of how I walk players through this and how I build kind of a blueprint for them as far as like where they're at to where they want to get to, walk you through that. And then also kind of go over some stuff so you can understand if working together might be something that's good for your junior golfer. So like I said, hopefully you guys enjoyed this video. If you did, go ahead and leave a like, and if you're new to the channel, go ahead and subscribe to get more videos like this every single week. I will see you guys in the next
