A short YouTube monologue by Anwar White (uploaded March 13, 2024) in which the speaker recounts receiving negative reactions after TikTok success and advises successful women—particularly smart, successful Black and brown women—not to ‘‘make themselves small’’ to fit family expectations. The speaker links tribal family pressure to downgrading oneself, warns that doing so can lead to choosing partners who are not on one’s level, and emphasizes that success (and being single) is not a failure but a birthright.

They be hating on you bad. Yeah. It's so interesting. You know, I've gotten quite a bit of success on Tick Tock. And I've noticed that a lot of my colleagues, they don't like me as much as they used to. Girl.
So here's the thing, and I tell this to a lot of my clients that are successful.
And I'm telling this to you now because this isn't like a woe is me situation. This is actually very important as it pertains to your dating life. A lot of women will stay single because they're successful in other parts of their life. And if they get their guy, it's like the ultimate success. Yeah. Success is your birthright. And you being single and not having a man is not going to bring you closer to people that you might not have a lot of commonality with anymore. Yeah. Because here's the thing. If you continue to make yourself small and downgrade yourself or your family, you will do that with men, and you will choose men that are not on your level. And I say this with love and respect because I was that girl. Not anymore.
