Coach Steve Bacon asked where you'd be if you kept every promise to yourself. The speaker argues self-deception is why we break them, and that lying to yourself erodes motivation just like lying to others does. Start honoring those promises today.

You know, something has been sticking with me since yesterday. My brother Coach Steve Bacon made a post, and the post basically— and I posted yesterday, most you guys missed it because I didn't see a lot of engagement on it, but it was so— maybe you just ignored it because it was one of those ones. When I talk about emotional intelligence, you know, we all know if you've been listening to me for any period of time that self-awareness is the absolute most important part of being able to practice emotional intelligence. But self-awareness expands out to all areas of your life. And what Steve said was he posed a question. He said, where would your life be if you kept all of the promises That you made to yourself. And you know, I've heard that in different variations before, but some reason when he said it, he was like, man, where would you be? Like, if everything you said you were going to do for yourself, you did it. And I was like, wow, like, where would I be? Because I'm always making promises to myself that I do not keep. And I wonder, does anybody feel me on that? Like, do you make promises to yourself that you don't keep? And then when I was walking this morning, I started taking it— I took it a little bit even deeper and said, you know what, like if somebody was lying to me, like outright bold-faced lie to me, it'll probably make me feel a certain kind of way. I probably wouldn't even fuck with that person no more. Like, be honest with y'all, I'd be like, you know what, I'm not really fooling with you because, you know, you just lie for no reason. You keep lying and you don't have to. And then I said, "Whoa! I lie to myself quite often, which is probably why I don't even fool with myself the way that I think I should, which is why I'm not getting the things done that I promised myself that I was going to do." That's the message: emotional intelligence, self-awareness. Where would your life be? If you kept all the promises to yourself and did everything you said you were going to do for yourself. But most importantly, let's make today the day that you stop lying to yourself.
