Emotional intelligence is keeping emotions from overwhelming your thinking. It breaks into four domains: self-awareness and managing your reactions (personal competencies), then situational awareness and relationship management (how you engage with others). The core is observation, discernment, and intentionality.

Okay, hi DB, talk to me a little bit about emotional intelligence. What is it?
So emotional intelligence, I think in its simplest form, is your ability to be able not to ever let your emotions overpower your intelligence. It is rooted in a basic framework. There's 4 domains, and you, you hear them quite often depending on your experience with it. And that's your ability to be self-aware, the ability to manage your reactions. And those 2 are what they call your personal competencies, right? It has everything to do with you. So your ability to be self-aware and manage the way you react to things. Then there's situational awareness and then relationship management. Situational awareness is a constant observation of having some discernment. On when you should engage or when you should not engage, when you should respond to something or maybe not respond. Sometimes you don't respond at all, sometimes you respond later. And then relationship management is being intentional about the access points you give people that are connected to you both personally and professionally.
