EMOTIONAL CAPACITY

DB Bedford explains emotional capacity as the finite emotional energy you have each day, like a car's gas tank. He recommends starting each day by assessing your emotional fuel and monitoring how you spend it across work, family, and personal projects to avoid burnout.

Peace, fam. DB Bedford here, your emotional intelligence expert. Listen, I want to drop a nugget for you to carry you through the week. Actually, this is how you probably should be operating on a day-to-day basis. But when it comes to emotional intelligence or being able to manage your emotions in any given moment, the secret is, is to understand that you only have what we like to call so much emotional capacity. for the day. Now, what does that mean, emotional capacity? It means that you only have the ability to engage with so much energy throughout the day before you get burnt out. And most of us step into the day without taking this into consideration. And so a good practice when it comes to emotional intelligence is when you get up every day, you take— you, you are conscious about you only have so much energy to give up for the day. It's like when you go jump in your car and you look at your gas tank, you know that you only have so much gas, which means you only can go so far before you have to go get some more gas. And even if you jump in and you have a full tank, you still can't get here to LA or from LA to the Bay with one tank of gas. Like, at some point you're gonna have to fill up. So if you start thinking about your day, even in your best mood, you only have so much energy for the day. And if you have that preset in your mind, then you'll be more mindful of who you give your energy to. Because you know that it's important to have enough energy to get through the entire day so that you can work, engage, come home, spend time with your family, work on your business, and get a good night's sleep and not be exhausted by the end of the day. Have you ever found yourself saying, man, it was a long day? That's because you exerted way too much energy and probably in spaces that you didn't need to. So I think this will be a key element that'll help you as you navigate throughout the week, but you should practice every single day. So it's really about having an honest assessment of how you feel, right? And what your mood is and how much you can engage with people on a positive level. Okay? And so that'll help you practice emotional intelligence in those moments that just pop up on you. Because, you know, a lot of times stuff just happens and it catches you off guard and you're wondering why you don't have the capacity to deal with this. You ever heard said to yourself, I can't deal with this right now? Because you don't have the emotional capacity. Because you have been getting emotionally entangled, right, with people throughout the day that you probably shouldn't have been engaged with in the first place. So that's where that situational awareness comes in at. So it's just something to be mindful of. You get really good at practicing emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is like a superpower. And you get really good at practicing these skills when you become an emotional intelligence ambassador.
