Couples at an emotional intelligence retreat share how learning to manage anger and communicate better saved their marriages. They credit concrete tools like metaphors for articulating feelings, and describe a safe space where they could lower their guards and find hope.

It's important for such this season, this time period in life. We need to learn to get along, not only with our spouses, with our families, with our friends, with our peers. We just need a better temperament. I was talking to my husband and my son about it the other day. We have been labeled angry and bitter, and we don't want to be that. And it's places like this where we can put our guard down.
That helps us to be more—
When I tell you guys we were late coming in, the energy was literally hopping off of the handle, the door handle, We could feel the energy outside the door before we ever even got in the room. We need this. We need more of these.
That's strength, right?
You gotta have strength to be loyal.
Everybody didn't even like you.
Kind of opened me up a little more, and then the laughter, and then just, you know, knowing everybody came here to better themselves. It just it made me feel better, so I'm way I'm in a way different place now.
Thank you.
The spirit of being orange. Happy birthday!
Happy birthday! Woo hoo hoo!
Love right there.
I just want to say simply stated, there's a saying that says any job is easy with the right tools. So I just want to say thank you for giving us the right tools to do. To do the job, to do the job of communicating with our family, our spouse or significant other. Just thank you for giving us the tool, giving us that reference point, and we can talk about it, we can laugh about it. Well, you know, you're orange and you need this.
Right.
Because oftentimes you don't know how to describe it. You know you want to get there. I'm trying to get this message through, but you don't know which vehicle to use to get there. And so thank you for the tool. and the vehicle to get us there, down the road of better communication. Yeah.
Because I felt like, yeah, I'm seeing it one way, she's seeing it another way. And so together, we got to come together to see how we both feel and, you know, and see it eye to eye. So again, thank you. Like, you're amazing. You are amazing. You need to be doing this type of stuff all around the world, if not just in the United States.
But I got more out of it today. Learning how to communicate with him. It's not my way. I have to communicate what's best for him. So I appreciate you know we have all kinds of problems.
But today I'm so pleased.
So I thank you, and I know I hear that word, but you know.
Regardless to what humps you go through giving this, don't ever give up. Please hold on to everything that everyone has said here because this is needed for all of us. We don't have this. We, for me, I'm gonna speak for me and myself, we are misguided. You know, we barely, we had friends get married that ain't lasted a year. Barely hanging on. It's tough, it's hard, marriage is hard, but it ain't that hard. So don't, regardless to what is, if you get a no, nobody wants it, somebody is going to get it. Somebody's going to want it and just keep moving.
The whole assignment today was kind of like, and I'm like, did you look at my paper?
Yeah.
