Hey guys, DB Bedford here, your emotional intelligence consultant, and this is where we take a look at trending news and things that are happening across the country through the lens of emotional intelligence. Today I want to talk a little bit about Roseanne Barr and the racist tweet that she put out about a former advisor for President Obama, an African-American woman, where Roseanne referred to her as an ape. I want you guys to take a look at this real quick, and we'll take a look at the lack of emotional intelligence in the situation when it comes to self-awareness and managing your reactions.
Roseanne was in damage control this morning, tweeting, I should have known better. Forgive me, my joke was in bad taste. She added, I am now leaving Twitter. At issue, a tweet which has since been deleted where the sitcom star compared former Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett to an ape. The apology wasn't enough for ABC. The network didn't mince words when canceling the show just hours later. ABC's president of entertainment issued a statement calling Roseanne's tweet abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.
See, when it comes to self-awareness and managing your reactions, like, one thing I'll always let people know, you have the right to feel however you want to feel. Yes, you do. You can feel any way you want towards people. The problem becomes when you do not manage your reactions. It becomes a problem. And a lot of times, the poor skills that people possess about having the ability to manage their reactions can cost them sometimes a little consequence, and sometimes it's a big consequence. She's up in the middle of the night And for whatever reason and however she decided, she decides to release this tweet. Now, I am sure, because another thing about emotional intelligence, she did not take under consideration the impact that her tweet was going to have on America as a whole. Emotional intelligence has these 4 domains that are very critical to our everyday lifestyle, and social awareness is one of those domains. Taking under consideration that your actions and what you do, what impact What impact is that going to have on you as a whole, your family, your friends, the job you work at, and things of that nature? So in this situation, not only does Roseanne's untasteful, distasteful tweet have a ripple effect across America, so now this is what everybody is talking about at the moment, it also cost 200 jobs for everybody that is associated with that show. You'll also see that her colleagues and the people that work with her cut her loose. The major network immediately let her go, even though there was tens of million dollars involved. She got cut loose in a heartbeat. They made that decision swift and quick. And the reason why we're bringing this out is to shine the light, number one, on people's behaviors. People have to understand, you have to understand that you are responsible for how you act no matter how you feel. It's also important for you to realize that if you run a business or if you are working for a company, your actions on and off the job are critical because we live in a time today where you can go viral in any minute. So I wanted you guys to just understand this: emotional intelligence is a very important platform that nobody can afford to ignore. It's one of those skills that it will only add to everything that you already know in life, and you can't afford not to possess this skill. So I encourage you, if you're watching this and if you've never heard about emotional intelligence, I encourage you to look deep into it. If you heard about it, I would encourage you to start to make sure you embrace it wholeheartedly and that you get up every day and you look at the world through the lens of emotional intelligence.
