Creating your own Typeface unique Style for U - Day 3

A typography tutorial walking you through exercises to develop your own handwriting style. The speaker has you write your name in unconventional mediums and reflect on what makes your lettering unique.
Welcome to this day three. The fastest way to learn typography is to first try it yourself. In this video you're going to have two different kind of activities. The very first thing is take a sheet of paper or maybe whatever medium you have with you and try to write down your name. Try to write down what is the best style which represents your name. Okay, it's like as natural as possible. Whatever you felt is good, you can write it down. How consciously you choose a writing medium. Okay, Maybe you would have choose paper, pen, Maybe you would have chose pencil. Maybe you choose sketch pen. Okay, you, you to use digital medium as well. That's okay, no problem. And what kind of a characteristic and style you exhibit there? Thirdly, what kind of expression are you making it? Are you making it illustrative or rigid? Are you making it very straight lines? You are. Are you making it in a sans serif or serif based? Try to observe that. Try to relate with what kind of a personality you have and what kind of a type you created. This is the very first step towards understanding how you typeface or typography. Leave the textbook way, leave the videos, leave all the materials available in the online. It has to come from you. Okay? That's the first activity. Once you are able to decipher it clearly. Now you will have a picture with you which is exactly representing your own. There are technical things you can mark in that. You can mark the senders, you can mark the senders kerning space. But let me make it very clear, this is one aspect. Now I'll give you a second activity in this video. Go to any places around your house or maybe in your office or wherever you are. Try to choose any unconventional medium apart from pen and pencil. Okay? So do not use this pen pencil, which you already know. Try to get a very good chart paper, white color and then write your entire name in. Okay? In a very big way. Don't write in a small way, write big. Okay? See, the unconventional medium could be. Even you could. You could take this as an unconventional medium. Just dip it in an ink and write it down. I wanted you to make yourself uncomfortable by doing this. Yeah, it'll be definitely difficult, but there are many learnings towards it. Okay, I'll share you in the next video, but just to give a nugget because you should have a clarity why you're doing this, right? Maybe you will not get hundred percent clarity, but I'll tell you, if you're trying to use an unconventional medium to express yourself, you will automatically create your own Style. Because this is very conventional, right? We are very convenient towards using this from our child. We are in a comfort zone to do it. But the moment when you take it in uncomfortable zone, when you take it unconventional object, you'll try to express it more naturally. You'll try to express it as writers. So whatever you've seen in the activity one, your personality will now come into this in a real time activity, real time picture. So you'll see a correlation will not be very different. Okay? Again, there are things to observe here. Choose any unconventional medium. Whatever you have in your house or nearby or that's up to you. Okay? You want to use ink. If you don't want to use ink, that's totally up to you. Let's say if your name is Kumaran, okay? You could write 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. From 1 to 10, write the numbers. Both of whatever you have written should have a same typeface family. Your own handwriting only. But it should look like same. Like when you take Helvetica. The numbers and the letters are literally the same family. Right? That's how it's called a typography. It should have the relevance between your letters and the numbers. So it should be same. That's the only criteria. It should be marked with a proper sans serif or serif based after you return it. Okay, Take a chart paper. First write down all these things. Then you use your sketch pen to mark where the ascenders are there, where the descenders are there. There is no descenders. Leave it. Where is the turning and where is the lettering? Where is the tracking? Where is the leading? Where is the top? I try to Write at least 100 words about. Why did you choose this medium? What is the internal reflection? Choose this medium and use this particular way of writing your name. Because your name is the first sweetest thing which you always hear in your entire world, right? So that's why I asked you to do it. If you're doing this two activity, you will have lot of perspective difference. Okay? Researching about types and creating new is not joke. It takes a lot of effort. We're trying to express ourselves naturally so that we will be very clear on how certain typeface can be filled. Go back to the earlier videos. Watch those terminologies. If you're not sure if you're able to watch this and come back here. Now you will write your own typeface, clear, okay? And then related to that existing activity and mark it. Now, I hope you have did this, but you have to pin this in this video. What you did, let me go through it and give you personalized feedback once. If you are able to reflect that, then we'll go for the day four, which is going to be even more interesting and interesting. Okay, see you in the next video.
