Day 22 - interview fear overcoming Skill Booster 100 Day Challenge

Jagadeesh P walks through concrete tactics to crush interview anxiety: how to craft your self-introduction, tell stories that stick, use the STAR model to explain projects, and write scripts for different time limits. Practice and prep are the path to confidence.
Since I'm traveling for some reasons, I'm joining from the mobile phone. But I hope it is fine for everybody. The topic which today people have asked me to answer is how do, how do you overcome the interview fear? How do you overcome the fear of like let's say people are coming out of interviews, right? They are attending phone call interviews. They're attending multiple interviews over virtual call live interviews. So this has been a very big pain point for many people out there. Okay, so what happens is. Just a second. Yeah, so what happens is over the time, so they developed a complex saying. How do I exactly practice. In fact, how do I what you call get this clarity. Just a second guys. I'm just copying this link for the meeting so that people can able to. Just a second. Just a second guys, just a second. So meanwhile people who can join in the WhatsApp. So I'm just sending out the link to you so that you guys can join it. Yes, guys. Okay, so now I think people were able to see the call and look at it. And I've also sent the link to you in. I hope everybody is able to see me. Guys, in YouTube. Can you just confirm me that you were able to see the video? What we are, what you call, what we are doing parallel is confirm us. That would be a great confirmation for me that it is happening live. Yes, guys. Okay, thank you so much. I think people are also chatting in the chat box. Thank you. Thank you guys. Thank you very much. And yes, hi. Other people also who have joined because of travel reasons, I'm not able to join the laptop. But anyway, this is a commitment which every single day I have, I have taken, I will deliver it for sure. And today the pain point students have asked me is how do you crack the interview in spite of what you call. In spite of the fear and the communication barriers, whatever they have. Okay. In fact, this is one of the pain points which many people have asked me earlier. But the thing is they are not sure how to. There is no method, there is no steps available. Okay, so let's go into this detail the very information, what you have to understand is you will have to write about yourself first, leave about attending interview. That is next interview comes very later. Okay, let's not talk about interview at all. Let's talk about first view.
Okay?
So make a note of whatever I'm saying so that you will get a clarity on what's happening.
Okay?
The moment when you are getting, let's say clear about what is your strength, what is your weakness. Writing about Yourself, let's say what projects you have. Like, let's say what kind of achievements you made. Like, let's say as a designer, what is the projects you had. And in that projects, what kind of what you call before and after you can able to show. Like let's say in if you did a lot of projects, let's say close to 10 plus projects. But the point is, if you are not able to tell that clearly first, that is a is a failure. Okay, so leave about interview, leave about fear, communication. Think about. Can you first write down yourself? Another very first activity. Guys, please take a note of it. Okay, Please make a note of it, everybody. First is write about yourself. Very simple. Can you write 5,000 words about you? Oh no, 5,000 is really high. At least thousand. Can you please help me out to make the other people bring into panelists. I made you a support and also enable them to switch on their camera. Okay, thank you. Thank you so much. Okay, and the second is okay at least if not thousand words, can you write 500 words? See, if you feel this step is difficult, I will tell you, you have already lost this dream. You cannot. You cannot introduce yourself properly. That is the main point here. Okay, Second, okay, please have written thousand words now. So what happens? You know? Second, what happens is you have to first picked out which is important for you, which is important for your career, which is important for your profile. Like let's say in your profile your top projects is like let's say one or two, which you did recently. That could be a great initiative.
Okay?
And the next could be like you got one design of what? That could be one to create a work. Guys, just a second. Just hold on for a second. Hold on. This place back. Okay, so second is your ability to pick, which is the important part of it. Okay? Like let's say you have written some design award, you got some design awards, you did some recent design projects. Or maybe in your seventh standard you would have got some praise in storytelling. That is okay. But you have to pick up the elements which is relevant to connect the dots. Now this is the most important part. Okay? People have a big time problem here only they will also write about themselves. But the problem comes they will not know how to pick the right elements. Okay? Okay. Why seven standard storytelling price competition. What we want is important. I'll tell you why. See, you may be very good UX researcher. There may be a problem solvers. You may be calling yourself as a storyteller. Storyteller. Storyteller in your workforce. But where is the proof you have to connect the dots saying see, from my earlier childhood I got an ability to tell stories. In my seventh channel itself, I've got a price for that. And eventually over the time what happened because of this pooring education, I lost that particular skill. So now I'm connecting the dots exactly that being a designer, I'm an excellent story to see. This is how you connect the dots. See the moment when you are getting this clarity, guys, you don't need any kind of a fear in the interview. First of all, there is no point in talking fear at all. Because you are talking about yourself. Honestly if you want to tell about something which you are not or maybe if you want to prepare a script or what you call I had something that becomes a big problem that is a absolute pain in the ass, right? So that becomes like why do I have to remember this? I have to tell this. What if they ask question like this, how do I answer it? Because I don't know, because you are projecting yourself wrong.
Okay.
Second important point is connecting the dots. You should be able to connect the stories from your child past, past. I would have a relevant project or anything and mention it. Okay? Third, you should bring about star model in your project. Let's say SDAR situation, task, action, results, every project what you did, okay? Even it's a small project, even it's a big project, even it's an exploitation what you did. But it cannot be counted as a project. Can be put in the start model.
Okay.
Can anybody type out of the chat what is mean by star model? Can anybody type out of the chat what is mean by start model? So that I will also know like what, what, what's your understanding this. Okay, can you type in the chat what is star model of Ritu? I think I have told this to many people as well. But any which way I just wanted to hear from you guys. Come on, come on. Type out, type out in the chat. Yes, yes. I think people are typing out the YouTube as per Nishit and other people, whoever is watching. Okay? Okay. So yes stands for situation, guys. E stands for task. A stands for action. R stands for results.
Okay?
So ultimately the moment when you are able to actually write down your project in this format. First of all, you don't need any kind of appear in interview to talk about this. I think in the, in the day 14 or 15 we talk detailed about this. How to construct this star model for your projects and how to bring the right elements, the percentage stats, the factual information and everything. Okay? Because the moment when you are bringing a clarity for your project that makes you stand apart, you have to remember this very carefully.
Okay?
So the third is about bringing the key products with the proper metrics. See, do this exact steps, guys. Don't confuse it. First, I told you about write about yourself 5,000 words.
Okay?
Second, I told you about connect the dots from the past. Because you have written about yourself completely. Your strength, your weakness, your story, your achievements, your education. Why you choose design. What are the emotional reason you are in this world and what did you feel like accomplishing in your entire life? So write about every possible thing about yourself in 5,000 words. If you're absolutely not sure, there is a book called self discovery document. Okay, you can able to mail me. You can able to send write a text in this YouTube. Also if you needed that that workbook to be emailed, I can do that. Drop your email ID or phone number, whatever. We can able to drop you in WhatsApp as well.
Okay?
That workbook will help you to just get started about yourself. People who don't know how to write about themselves can get started with that very simple.
Okay?
Second, you can able to connect the dots by picking out the right stories from your design journey. What you have, okay, like let's say your seventh standard storytelling competition. You are a sportsman. Maybe you're a very good what you call action taker or a very good communicator. You're a very good problem solver. Pick out some element. It is important. Third, what did I tell you? You have to just write down the metrics of the project in the star form.
Okay?
Situation, task, action, result. What are the results you got? Before it was like this? After it was. Maybe you could have helped your friend. Maybe you could have helped some of your colleagues as well. By that you are exhibiting that you are problem solving. See, think about it. First of all, you are not just telling you are this, that, with that and all. The moment. If you are telling this that people will not understand and relate with you. The moment when you show incident. The moment when you show a real time case study in the situation of my friend who is struggling with that. I gone volunteer to help my friends solve this problem. I used my communication skills. I used my story to remember. In fact, I used convergent thinking in my personal life to solve that problem. I found out the various ideas and then we solved it in one day. My friend is able to come out of that situation because of that. I itself believed myself that I had this skill very strong and that connected me during the design journey. Also what I have, see this is what is called real story. See guys, when you are telling about your real story, you will not get any fear in your team.
That's it.
When you're telling about your real story, in fact you will feel so happy, it's exactly the opposite. You'll be excited. You'll feel so extremely energetic. And you don't need any kind of a script to answer them. All you need is a right mindset and a proper preparation for that.
Okay?
So the moment when you're able to write about yourself, connect the dots and bring the metrics, then you are ready with this.
Okay?
Okay. That is just three steps you have said is ready now.
Okay.
So I have neatly written. Everything is done. Fourth step. What you have to do is you have to split this into a big interview, medium and short. Like let's say if somebody's asking you for 10 minutes, you should be able to explain along with your introduction, your dots connecting the story and then your projects and then why you wanted to come to this interview.
Okay?
That also you have to answer. So just 10 minutes. You should be able to prepare a script for this. You can use your Codex document. You can use your entire Codex document and give one form. Give me a 5,000 word summary about myself regarding the entire project. That's it. It will bring you a complete strategy.
Okay.
If I have to go from a dream company, so and so, like let's say Honeywell, like let's say thcs, let's say Accenture, what do I talk for the 10 minutes? Give me a script. That's it. It's just people who did codex, they are like super. Because in one prompt you're going to get everything just like that. Okay. I mean that's the advantage of being writing the codex.
Okay.
Other people who don't know codex, it's okay, fine. Guys, leave it. People are watching outside. See, there is a process to do it. If you are doing in that process, the steps will become very, very short. Crystal clear, simple. If you are not doing that, it may take a lot of time for you.
Just.
Okay. Yes. So you can able to prepare a ten minute strip. Once you prepare the ten minutes tip, then bring the five minute strip.
Okay.
Say I'm breaking down the fourth step. Ten minutes trip, five minutes tip, three minutes trip, two minutes trip, one minute strip. Okay, so first is for ten minutes. Next is five minutes. Next is three minutes, two minutes and one minute. Okay. Jagdish, I have a five different script up. How do I use this see ten minutes used for something inside the interview call. If you have to talk to somebody after you get along and then you tell them, tell about yourself and all.
Okay?
3 minutes or 5 minutes Script call can be used along with like let's say if you're in a hurry in an interview, you want to tell about yourself very quickly, you can able to talk about them. Let's say if you have a child, let's say if you have a team with somebody, okay. Like any designer or you wanted to network with them, you can able to use this five minutes to talk about them.
Okay?
If it's a three minutes, you can able to use it over the phone call. Three minutes is over the phone call.
Okay.
Or possibly when somebody is in the interview same they are saying we are in a hurry, please introduce yourself. We have 50 candidates already waiting outside. Can you please introduce. So you have to understand that urgency. Sometimes even if they don't tell you to understand the urgency that this person is in the very urgent weeks of three minutes, you have to explore.
Okay?
Two minutes and one minute is very powerful. I will tell you when two minutes and one minute should be used over the phone call very specifically. Like let's say if it's a cold call, if you don't know that person the first time they're calling you or maybe you are calling him, okay. Through some LinkedIn contact or something at that time they don't know both about you.
Right?
Three minutes for the people who knows you, at least one or two times you're in traffic, two minutes and one minute. You should be careful enough to explain to them. Hey. Hi, I'm Jagish. And so. And so I'm from this place. I'm looking for a product designer role and I saw some vacancy there. And you know what? I did one project very similar to your experience, what you had. And to tell about myself, I'm very good communicator. I'm a very good storyteller. I'm very good in visual presentation. I wanted to send my portfolio to you. Why don't you have a look at it? I hope if that is clear we can have an interview in the evening. So can I just let know what is your expectation from the company side being for this role? I. I have already read your roles and descriptions but I want to talk to you because it was very confusing in the initial website and can I understand who's going to come for my interview? Okay, fine. So should be having the phone call or the zoom call. Okay, fine. Man thank you so much. Bye bye. That's it. 40 seconds to one minute. This is what you have to talk. You have to get that you ask the right questions in a very short span of time. How do I confidently do it without fear? That's why you have to write the prepare as a script. One minute to me, okay? There is something called two minutes. One minute. I told you, right? There is a last script which is called 40 seconds. This is called elevator pitch. You have to write it down, guys. Everything. Don't think it will just let that pop in your head. And you will talk like a magical.
No.
You have to prepare this first, second step, third step and then fourth step and then write it down. 10 minutes, 5 minutes, 33 minute, 2 minutes, 1 minute and then 40 seconds. In 40 seconds you should be able to tell yourself, right? Let's say if I have to introduce myself in 40 seconds, somebody who is in the elevator, elevator and say if you go in a lift, if you go in elevator, you get hardly one minute or even less than that, right? If let's say some CEOs is coming, let's say some very big designer you are meeting. Or maybe if a very important person you've been dreaming to meet for a very long time, that person is coming on that time. You don't. You will. You will not have time to talk to 10 minutes for this guy. You have one minute to talk to that person. 40 seconds or even less, right? Because after that that person is also busy and you will also be redirected. But it would be inappropriate to go and talk to a person deliberately volunteer unless until if you know the person before, right? So that's why there's 42nd elevator which is very prevalent. So how do you break this 40 seconds? First of all, if I have to tell about myself. Hi sir, I'm Jagdish. It's nice meeting you. I saw your earlier project which you had an award for your company. But Mr. Medical Product Design award you got for your team. And you were able to develop 11 products in the last one year. Extremely, extremely inspiring, sir. And you know what I got for national award for a ventilator called Nomo that is currently there in thousands of hospitals in India. Sir, what I have very similarly finding out is why don't we collaborate in a project? It's not because of the award what I got or you got. It's because of the mission what we have. So why don't we combine to deliver a project like let's say I understand that you're doing some baby related products. Let's say you're doing some ventilator related products. So I have an excellent knowledge in Medical Products. 10 years experience I have. So I'll just send you a proposal about my project. Sir, I already identified a gap in you. Can I get your email id? Can I talk to your secretary? Can I have your phone number? So why don't we just meet in a casual zoom call to understand better. If everything goes good, we'll meet you in Bangalore. So next week I'm available near Bangalore at your house. That's it. See you have to be prepared enough for that person whom you're going to talk with your introduction. With your best projects, with your relevance with your they don't think. Don't tell the jack this. I don't have any design about you. What do I talk? Guys tell what is your achievement first tell what did you do first? According to you what is a big achievement in your life? Bring that story and connect the dots here.
Don't.
Don't think much.
Okay?
Let me get design award and then I'll prepare the introduction. You will never get job in design for sure. Please understand this carefully.
Okay?
The moment when you're understanding this carefully, this is going to be a powerful startup. This is going to be ultimate importance factor in your introduction part. In fact, this is a very very important thing more than design. Even if you are not good in design, that can be slowly learned. No problem. But initially if you're not able to communicate yourself properly to the people whom you're going to recruit, it becomes a hell of a lot of problem for you to get inside the industry. Okay, fine guys. I hope I made it clear for you. This is a very very simple four steps. Write about yourself 5,000 words. Connect the dots, bring the past from the earlier stories. Third try to bring the metrics of the project. And fourth is prepare a self introduction about yourself with a different different script.
Okay?
In that script you should also mention why are you relevantly applying for this work. And a big call to action should be there. Okay, if you break down this four step, you need to prepare a 10 minute script, 5 minute script, 2 minute, 1 minute and finally a 40 second script which is most most relevant for quick interviews, for a quick introductions. Okay, So I told you which script to be used at, where and what it should be used for which situation. Please go and apply that.
Okay.
So for this entire thing, the entire key step is for you to first prepare. Don't think without preparation. You can go and talk in the interview.
Don't do that.
Absolutely. You will get fear, you will get nervous, you will get shaky. You will have lot of fear developed inside yourself to talk to the recruiters.
Okay.
In fact, in our community has asked this question. I hope I have answered this in a very detailed way. Is there in this call? Hello? Guys, Excuse me, Can you hear me? Guys? Can you. Can you fully listen to what I said? Everything is clear. Yes, thank you so much. I believe this call would have given you a clarity. Yes. So people in the YouTube, let me also check what is their comments. And also people who are here, please type on the chat. Guys, what. What. What is your thought process? And do you think so that I can also answer a few questions before we. Before we what? You. Before we catch up? Okay. A lot of comments have come to YouTube. Just a second, Just a second. Situation. Excellent, excellent, Excellent. People have written star. Sir, I understand your point that something can be prepared. But if we make a file script, maybe it can sound a little unnatural. No, you have. You are going to tell about yourself mission. Why it sounds unnatural. Why? Why does it sound unnatural? You have to write it first. Yes. So how do I tell this 40 second script now? I told you, right? I written it multiple times. I told it multiple times. That is why I'm able to bring it. Do you think without preparation you can able to talk about yourself? You have to first write about yourself here. See, naturally you can tell some one or two stories. But if you have to really go and crack the interview. If you have to talk to somebody without any fear, Preparation is mandatory, 100% important. I believe you got this point, Nish. It's a good question that you asked. But if you make a fit, maybe sound unnatural seems to be like rock method. A little comment on this piece. I. I hope I clarified this. See, that is why it is very important for somebody to understand like this is ultimately coming with a preparation, not with anything else. If you are not able to prepare, I will tell you what will happen. You won't be able to talk anything. You will be completely numb. You'll be out of this context. Okay, so give me a second. One second. Okay, fine. So you'll be completely numb. If you're able. If you're not able to prepare anything.
Okay.
How does it become rock learning? It won't become. That is why you're writing about yourself and then. See, I told about myself, right? Does it sound like a rock learning? I'm just reflecting on whatever I'm telling based on the achievements. What I Have. That is why that is very important to first write it down. You don't have to just write it down and read it. I'm not telling that. I'm telling you to write it down. To first clarify inside your head and then you will know.
Okay.
It's an interview call. What should I talk? I have to talk. Only three lines. Three important projects. Two minutes. Okay. Hi sir. And so. And so I said hi sir, I'm wrong. My name is Arvind. I was looking forward for your concert yesterday. I saw your message in the. In the LinkedIn. Thank you so much for giving me a call back. So to tell. Can I tell about myself two minutes for you or you wanted to ask them questions before that? No, I mean you can tell. Okay. Hi sir, I'm Aravin. I did my UI UX project in this particular thing and I'm coming from this place and I got one year of experience. I completed my bachelor in this. The reason why I switched to design field is because of the the kind of creativity what it offers being in being a different, different field guy. I've come into this and from the childhood I was so passionated to build a lot of creative ideas around. That is why I look forward to become a problem solver. And this design creativity field is very much aligned. That is the reason I've been transitioning this path for a longer time. I've attended close to 10 interviews so far. So none of the interviews are very interesting for me. So your company, what I liked about is you have a very good work life balance and you have some very good creative design studio. I looked at your photo, I looked at your employees work life and everything. It was really great. I talked to few of your employees as well. I was very interested. And you know what? One of my projects which I already sent you, you can find that project is very relevant for that skill set what you're looking for. In fact, if you want to know more about me, I also love to interact with your design team and can we have an interview task or something like that so that we can get it forward? So what do you think sir? That's it. What do you mean? Even less than two minutes I talk. But this is enough. You don't have to talk beyond this. What HRS required, what interviewers require, what design studio studio heads require, they require your skill set. They require how you can help to solve the problem they require about yourself to tell clearly are you a perfect person to fix Simple. That is why you cannot go and think during the Phone call. You have to prepare this question automatically. Cool, fine. Guys, I hope I answered this question initially. Thank you so much for answering asking this. Any anything, any questions Guys, if no questions is there, you can wrap up. I believe I've given you a precious clear information on how to prepare, how to crack it and how to practice it. See this doesn't come one time, multiple times. You'll have to practice. Can I tell you how many times I practice? Type out in the chat box. Maybe if you have any numbers at least how many times you would have practiced. Can you tell me any numbers based. Please, please tell me exactly so that I will know how are you guys speaking? How many times I would have practiced my introduction. I can talk about myself for 10 minutes, 5 minutes, 4 minutes, 3 minutes, 2 minutes, 40 seconds. Even if you ask me 10 seconds I can able to talk. Even if you ask me 3 seconds, I can able to talk.
Leave me.
But I'm just telling you the practice what I have. I practice more than thousand times guys. Thousand times, not fifty times thousand times. That's why you will be able to crystal clearly tell. You have to keep a voice note recorded in your WhatsApp. Okay. Take your phone, record a voice note for 5 minutes talking about record of watching for 3 minutes, talking about 2 minutes, 1 minute 40 seconds. Send to your mentors, send to your accountability partners, whoever is your accountability partner, whoever you have, send them, ask them feedback multiple times. Do it. How do I introduce myself? That is why the preparation is very important to write it first and then only you can talk. Talking. Talking is not the problem point and then talk properly. The moment when you're able to do it again and again and again and again and again. You will know what exactly to pick. You will know what exactly not to talk. People are sometimes talking, I don't know in the phone call. Sir. Okay. Sir. Okay. See this kind of words and all should not come in the in the introduction at all. Sir, I think the moment when you are having a little dissertation itself, it means that you are not prepared for that call. Definitely you will get here. Sir. See with the moment when you're thinking a little bit itself, the preparation is zero point. That is why the script is very important. You will have to write it up, prepare and then talk naturally. You definitely get it because you're talking about yourself, right? So you should not think anything. I. I mean I can see people who are talking in the phone also when interview because I have a lot of recordings for the student. Sir. So Kerry, tell about your Company. You should not talk about that here. You should not talk about, talk about, talk to an interviewer like this. You have to ask in a very polite way saying sir, could you tell about your work life balance? Your company is really good. But I don't just know about this because in my earlier company I did not have a good experience. Would you please explain that? See, this is the way to ask. That's why it's called preparation. If you're already prepared to ask this question, you'll be absolutely clear. Then it asks, can you just introduce about the project which I'm going to work. See, people ask like a very rude man. Yesterday Shanti also gave me a recording. It was like he was sounding very rude to the record. That is not correct. Exactly. You should talk in a more polite way to ask the questions in a more careful way.
Okay.
Anyway, I'll break down the call for you later. But for now this is okay.
Okay.
I hope this learning is clear for you. So what you have to do is today I'm not giving you attendance. The reason because tomorrow I'm going to give you 100 points to pick for the hackathon or today's creative booster. For the Tomorrow's creative booster. 50, 25. 25. Tomorrow you're going to get 100 points for that. Okay. Because I'm away from the system and connecting the mobile website.
Okay.
And make sure you type your learnings and put it in the feed section. You can create a feed for today's top learnings and takeaways. Put one picture of you. How did you learn? You are your picture of your room, whatever. And type out your levels provided if you put any feed post you get 25 points as well. Already you're getting 20 points as well. Already you're getting points for that.
Okay.
They're not just typing in the comments. You're just creating a speed and approach.
Okay.
And attack the things called 100 days. Booster and tag the things called creative skill. Booster and tag. A skill called interview. Because we are talking about interview, right? And communication. Tag these four things and mark. Okay, so automatically you will be getting points. Fine guys. So any doubts is there, can we wrap up? Any doubts is there? Can we wrap up? I believe I have given you a full clarity on what to do. Okay, fine guys, any doubts is there? Can we have a please confirm me? Yeah, no doubt. Okay, fine guys, excellent. Have a great day. And if any doubts is there no problem, we can meet tomorrow. Also tomorrow we have a interesting mission which is like Mission 7 in fact, this is a system design mission. Open learning space. Tomorrow you're going to learn something. Tomorrow you're going to learn some new design concept which you are not even learned it before in your lifetime. It's a very, very important subject in, in design. And people who know this can top notch the game like anything. Okay, so 5 o' clock to 7 o', clock. I'll send you the zoom link. We can meet there. And thank you guys again. This is not for the people who are watching YouTube live. This is for our community call. This is a hackathon. Mission seven. We are yet to complete mission eight, nine, ten going forward. And yeah, for the hackathon, for the level one, level three and level four, mainly for process and automation. Okay. AI mastery. So you are going to get bulk consensus. Okay. And today I've extended one more day because I have not yet announced the winner. Tomorrow morning is the winner announcement.
Okay.
In the hackathon call and still people are completing the courses. I can understand. Go and do it you. Because ultimately everything will be put together for our pants calculation. The people like Pfizer and other Mustang. Don't worry, I'll add your pants manually. Okay, Have a great day guys. See you tomorrow.
Okay, bye.
