Day 42-Unlearning in Design-100 Days 100 Skill Booster Sessions

Jagdish explains why designers need to unlearn outdated patterns to stay creative and advance their careers. He covers neuroplasticity and how to adapt your learning methods, with interactive moments that ask you to reflect on your own design habits.
Foreign guys, welcome to this day 42 of the skill booster session. So excited. And also we are going live in YouTube in just a minute and people are joining yet. Now today we have a very, very interesting skill to learn, guys. Okay, this is in fact most most important skill for a designer. And this is a intangible skill. So people don't see this as a very what you call a tangible skill and people don't think this is very important, but this is hidden skill. Okay? So that's the reason I'm telling you this. This is in the stealth mode. But if you're not properly getting aware of that, okay, like let's say if you're not properly going into a mode of growing this particular skill, in fact, it is a very different skill on the other end. It is like. Just a second, guys. Just a second. Just changing it to just a second. Give me a minute. Yes. Yes. Good morning, guys. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Just a minute. Okay, that's interesting. Good. So this is a very hidden skill. Okay? So what we are going to learn today is a hidden skill. So a lot of people don't know what is this about? And a lot of people are clueless. What is this? It? This looks like a perspective. No, this is actually a skill. And this is very, very important being a designer at this point of time. Okay, so before that, let me also put it. Okay, I'm just pasting it in the group as well so that people who are interested can join here. And please do forward to your friends as well. Guys, whoever is attending this session today, please do forward to them as well. Personally to them as well as in the groups so that they will be also interested to participate in these things. Okay, just a second. I'm just pasting it out to these people so that they will be also participating. It will be more fun. Okay, that's great. Welcome guys. Welcome to this session. So what I was telling you about, this behind hidden skill is actually called unlearning the design. Okay? So a lot of times what we will be doing, we will be learning, right? We'll be learning design, we'll be learning this skill, we'll be learning that skill. We'll be like, okay, I need to learn the sketching skills. I need to learn this, what you call visualization skills. I need to learn this visual design skill. I need to need to learn research skills. A lot of times we'll be talking only that. But this is a. Ulta. This is exactly the other way around. This is called unlearning. In design, lot of people have a big time problem in understanding this. Guys, do switch on your camera. That will be helpful for everybody also. Okay, I'm just. I'm just sharing my screen. So what is this unlearning Jagdish? This is exactly on the day 42, what we are covering this topic. So I wanted to give you a very important note saying it is more important for a designer to unlearn compared to learn. Many times, because we have been in this particular society and then we have been working with many other designers or friends or family, our entire design communities all around us, right? So many times we have been wrongly fed with a lot of information. And being a designer, if you operate with the same mindset and attitude, what happens is the output, what you produce is also very much similar to what others are also producing. Are you guys agreeing with me or not? Type out in the chat if you agree. The reason being, if you are doing the same things what others are also doing, you won't be able to create any kind of a difference. The creative difference, what you can make being a designer will not be coming into the picture. For that what you have to do, you will have to understand the skill. This is the power of unlearning and creating a new learning pattern. Okay, what is the skill jagdish about? This is about unlearning and it can be applied for any industries, guys, product design, ui, UX design. I mean it doesn't matter what industry you are. Okay, I will tell you what are the difference in this particular skill. You will be able to create a huge difference. Very simple, directly, fair, direct. Because the way in which you unlearn and find out the new patterns to learn again, it will be very different. It will be very, very different. Okay? And it helps you adapt. The reason being you are becoming so important in your field. You are able to learn whatever new comes in as a creative designer and you will see the difference happening. Like let's say a new topic is coming tomorrow. Okay? You will be able to learn much faster where others will be seeing. Okay, it looks very difficult here. Should I learn the skill or not? Is it okay to learn? People will be still thinking, but you have that ability to quickly learn, unlearn the old patterns and start creating new products around it. So you will be more flexible, you will be more faster. So that is the main reason we are teaching this skill. Okay, so what is this concept all about? First of all, inside our brain there are something called neuroplasticity. When we think About a particular problem solving ability or a pattern. What happens typically is your brain will be fired in a brain will fire neurons in a particular way, okay? It will travel through the neurons. And what happens is our brain develops a pattern when we are learning something new. Okay, and what happens? It takes some effort for you to learn and install another pattern consciously. It takes little time. Okay, so what happens? We don't learn anything new very often. We just keep on retrieving whatever we already learned and then we stay in a comfort zone. But the moment when you start learning everything new, and then when you go back to your learnings and then you say, okay, whatever I learned earlier is not correct, I should correct my learning now. I have to learn new pattern. Then what happens? Your new neuroplasticity becomes very different. Your entire brain adopts to a new pathways. This is called neuroplasticity basis. If you keep on doing this, guys, your brain will become so flexible. You will be able to learn a lot of things, you will be able to execute lot of things. And whether any kind of a new creative perspective or any new technology tool, anything is coming. You will learn in minutes where others will be finding out a lot of difficulty. How many of you understood what I said now? Are you guys understanding or not? Are you guys understanding what I said now? So that is the point, okay? Yes. So the second is learning path, like let's say metaverse, like let's say virtual reality, augmented reality. These are all the new technologies which has been emerging. We know that people have already started using it. Okay, and micro learning. Yesterday we talked about micro learning and design and practical sessions. How do you unlearn lot of things? By understanding the importance of practical scenarios. Sorry, not session, scenario. Okay? Like let's say if you encounter a problem in a real time, okay? If you work on a project on a real time, if you solve with a mindset of helping, what happens? You will be able to develop a new pattern on that time. Okay? You will be able to develop a new pattern on that respect, it will not be very new for you. Many people, what they do, they just get the problem and then they solve it. They go for the industry, they get the problem, they solve it. But here you are creating deliberately new patterns inside your brain so that the way in which you unlearn will be very, very different. This is the main, main important factor, guys. See, you will have to do it deliberately. This is a skill, right? I told you this is a skill. You have to deliberately practice it. Then and only you can see Your neuroplasticity getting more bigger. See, this is very, very important in this whole slide, guys. If you're trying to re learn and unlearn, this neuroplasticity becomes super flexible inside your brain. And what happens? You will be able to adapt a lot of new learnings and you will be able to learn lot of things compared to any other people. What happens when you learn more? When you learn more, your earning ability also becomes more. You will be able to solve a wider problem and a bigger problem. And the impact what you're creating will be far more different. Okay, Are you guys understanding type out in the chat you if you are understanding this particular skill? Okay, yeah. You must have definitely known why this is important. This combats the cognitive biases. Many times we have a cognitive bias. What is cognitive bias? We just get stuck in something. We think that this is how it should be done. Okay? We don't go beyond our normal thought process at all. That is the reason many times we are very rigid and we are not able to come out of the creative block. Many people who have creative blocks, right? Many people tell I have a creative block, I am not creative. This, that and all. It's exactly, this is the reason, okay? And it enhances your relevance and boost problem solving ability. Very, very simple. So in order to remove your creative block, you need to know what is the power of unlearning in design. So very, very important topic. Okay, so what are the relevant data regarding to it? First of all, your career longevity will be very, very high. You will have lot of satisfaction in your work. Because every day you're learning, right? It becomes so interesting, you will be happy. Second 40 percentage project completion efficiency goes up. Third, 60% better role change if you are switching for another career. This is very, very true, guys. See guys, when you are switching the job, what happens? You will be able to find a relevant opportunity because you know this is what is exciting you. This is what you've been learning new and you needed this same to happen again. So everything starts with that kind of unlearning pattern. See, this is a very important skill deliberately. I took this topic today because many times we are learning a skill, but we don't know. There are certain patterns which we have to unlearn. Like let's say what is mean by unlearning? I'll give you a classical example. We are reading book, right? We are writing exams in our school, college. If we do in that way, are we really implementing whatever we are learning every single day? First of all, you have to ask this question yourself. Second, how much are we learned in the session? I mean in the college or school is practically being used by you every single day. If the answer is no, then that way of learning is completely not correct, not relevant. So in this design education, what I used to tell students and what we used to do every single day is we make mistakes and then we do action. Okay, sorry. We do action and then we make mistakes and then we learn. When you do a project without knowing much details, you will be making lot of mistakes. Right? When you make mistakes and then I teach you a concept or a perspective, you learn a lot with that correction. If you do a project, you will be able to deliver a far more better result and two things will happen. One is you will not forget that concept. Second is you will have developed a pattern inside your brain that this is how the learning pattern needs to be there. This is how the real time problem is. Nobody, no client will give you full clarity. Client will come up with a basic information only. But you will have to dig deeper, talk to the people, get the research done, find out the ideas, solve the problem, present the solution. Very simple. See? Old new. Old pattern of learning. New pattern of learning, Right. I'm just giving you a small example, but it applicables for everything. So whatever we have learned so far, like let's say if we have to talk to people, we have to take the phone, dial the number. Okay. Normal pattern. What are the new learning pattern? New learning pattern has not come. We have only that method. Okay, Maybe we can do something. We can able to open WhatsApp and call them. Right? That's the second way of learning. Like let's say the new, new way to achieve the same goal. Okay, what are the different way of learning? Okay, why don't I always call? I can just message whatever I want, right? I don't have to even talk. Yeah, I can quickly message. Oh no, messaging takes a lot of time. Can I put a voice note? Okay, I'll put a voice note. Right. So our objective is to reach a person. Either we reach in phone or WhatsApp or text or voice or WhatsApp calling or anything, it doesn't matter. Right. So people who are very stuck in their mind, what they'll do if sometimes phone is not ringing or phone is not going. Oh, why is this person not picking the call? I'm getting frustrated. I'm getting frustrated. Right? But people who don't have this thing, they are out of this cognitive biases or creative block. They'll find A way. Oh. If this person is not picking the call, why not default an alternate way. Okay. Both of us has a common friend. Let me go and talk to this guy. We'll try to catch where is this guy? Second, can I try in WhatsApp? Maybe his. His phone is not ringing properly. His WhatsApp notification will ring. Okay. Third, I don't know whether if that person is in meeting or what if I text him, probably he may reply, right? Fourth. Okay. Maybe I can put a short voice note. Maybe he's in some kind of a crowd environment. He's not able to hear me properly. But he can able to hear my voice closely putting here and he can reply me, right? So there are alternate way you can have in your brain to reach that person. This is called new way of learning. I have not told you that, but you have implemented that at that moment. Whenever you are a designer, many times you will be given a problem. Definitely you will be given complex problem. Okay. But if you are in the same learning pattern, you will not be very different, guys. You will have. You will have no difference in creating a solution. That is why this skill is very important. So how to improve the skill? Jish, let's come to that part. But let's understand the important first. Okay. Your brain engages completely your prefrontal context. I already told you, right? Prefrontal cortex is for creativity. Very simple. Remember that hippocampus helps that. So prefrontal cortex. If you have continuously activated like this asking question. How do I creatively solve? How do I creatively solve? You will find a lot of new ways coming on. That is the most advantage. Okay. You will have to always ask a question. How do I creatively solve it? How do I creatively solve it? What happens? Your brain finds a new patterns. Your brain starts working in a different way and it produces a new pattern. That's what is called prefrontal cortex. The more you activate this, the better you will be able to solve a problem. This is the most, most important thing, guys. Okay. So what are the common mistakes people resist for change? Very, very, very, very common. Yagdish. I am very, very skeptical to change here. Nobody tells that, but they keep it in their mind. Whenever I ask you to learn something new, not people are very hesitant to. Not people are very happy to change that. We as a human are like that. Okay. And skipping the reflection, this is most, most important. How many times I've asked you to write your learnings? When you recollect from the past mistakes what you had and the learnings what you're having in the session or something. You will have lot of reflection happening. You will have lot of internal change happening. How your brain rewires, how your neuroplasticity rewires. How the new unlearning happens and the new learning goes inside. It is only by reflecting, okay? And sometimes overlooking integration. That means taking granted. Ah, this is okay, fine, normal only. No, you are not seeing closely. What is the pattern which has happened earlier? Like let's say I told you an example, right? The conventional education and design education. You're just taking it granted. If you go deeper and think it reflects on everything of our life. See, we used to wear uniform to the school. We used to have a prayer session. We used to have a lecture typically. We used to have some kind of a lunch break. We used to have some kind of a PT break. We used to have a Saturday Sunday. See everything, whatever is happening, it's same reflecting in your life also currently, if you look closely one or the other way, we are stuck into that. If you try to unlock it, then you have to see it even more closely and try to unlock it. Oh, I'm doing the same mistake what I'm doing in the earlier days. Okay, Now I should choose an environment where I have the work life balance. I have to choose an environment where I can able to work at any time, whatever I want. Not like a school timing 9 to 5. If I have to really go into a very creative field, I have to go into a product design studio where everyday creativity is practiced. Not a rot learning way or a typical way. They will take attendance. They will take this in my studio until people don't even care which time I come. That is the kind of environment what I'm working. Okay? Which time I come, which time? Nobody asks. Even I don't ask anybody in my studio. So that is the kind of creative freedom we got. But people expect results that is there, right? If you're not adding any results, then they'll throw you out. So see what has happened in your life and see what is happening now. If you are not unlearning and relearning, same things will repeat in your career again and again and again. And that creates a lot of same results. If you want a high salary, if you wanted to create a high impact in product design, you will have to look at all these things or you will be in the same situation forever. You will be learning skills, but what is the point? You will not be able to change anything. So that is why we are talking about choosing the right studio, choosing the right skill to the right company at the right time to get the right salary and the right job is very very important. Okay? Yes. So how to master this skill? Simple techniques. I'll tell you guys. Okay. What is the unlearning techniques you can have? First of all, identify the outdated practices. Can you write three things which is outdated in your life in your notepad. Now can you open your notepad and write what are the three things which you're having outdated in your life in your notepad and pen. Can you write it? Please switch on your camera. I just wanted to see whether if you guys are also doing. Are you guys comfortable? Come on. Yes. Are you guys able to. Welcome Anju. Welcome Srinivas. Thank you so much. Yes. So I'm just asking you what are the three things which you seem in your life is outdated you think should be improved? Can you tell me Manigan? Few things. Oh, sorry. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Sorry. Marion, I muted. Yeah, same. Same for me. I have to improve my learning skill. Learning skill. Okay. Second, now you are about to tell something learning skill. And then please continue that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The way of learning. Today we have multiple choices to learn something. Example A. We are not not using a effectively. Good. That is second thing. Any other. Any other thing which is very outdated in your career. Guys, if you can able to tell me, it will help us to connect with this topic. Fast. Fast. I just need one thing from any. Everybody can you able to type? Yeah, go ahead. Any one old learning pattern which you think which is. See, I just gave you an example of learning system, right? We already discussed that. And I also told you a learning system of how to reach a person in phone. Giving you a small example. Okay then outdated system of how our schooling education is still reflecting in ourselves. Even if we don't like that. Even if we wanted to run away from this, it is imbibed already, right? We can't change it because habit is more stronger. Guys, I will tell you. Your environment is actually stronger than your willpower. Even though you may be very determined. You may be super personality. Or maybe you may be a magical guy. Okay? You are having so much of geniusness. But your environment is always stronger than your willpower. Okay? That is why the learning pattern what we are still exhibiting is very, very, very, very stronger. And you cannot change it. It's very difficult to change. Unless until you deliberately take an action. Unless until you force fit something. And I'll tell you what is the. What is the symptom if you Are force fitting something, it will be very uncomfortable. It will be very painful. It will be very, very painful. You cannot. You cannot. What you call. You cannot take it very easily. If you are very uncomfortable in doing certain things, you are in the right track. You are learning something new. Your. Your pattern is getting unlearned. And you are learning a new pattern. You are on the right track. If you are getting very comfortable normal, then you're going into a mode of lazy. Then you're going into the mode of like. Let's say nothing will happen. I told you, right? The neuroplasticity inside our brain will not change. Will be the same yesterday. How it is today also it will be tomorrow also it will be the same. So when you're installing a new pattern of learning, this is how it should be learned, okay? Now AI has come. Now the design industry is very different. Now. The skill what I have should be different. In order to match this, this is a new learning pattern. If you are not accustoming to this, what happens? People will not take you. Very simple, right? So in order to match this, what you have to do, you will have to ask your mentors. Or maybe you have to ask your accountability partners. Or you have to ask yourself what I have to do consistently in order to get this alignment properly. And what I have to do in order to surpass this. This is called new learning pattern. And how to do it, you have to do it by a series of steps. First, you will have to write what is updated in your career, in your life, and what you have to do to take steps and action. And then use your codex document properly to ask the same prompt. If I have to unlearn these things, right? Let's say you have written three things, right? What kind of affirmations I have to give, what kind of skills I have to relearn in order to do that, you ask this. It will definitely produce the output. Sure you will be getting this answer, right? So you should start understanding and doing this. When you're doing this, it will become uncomfortable. Guys, I'll tell you. Because when you're learning something new, like let's say a new pattern of learning, okay? See, there are two people available for you. Okay? One guy is telling. I will. I will first take a session for you, okay? How to swim. No, no. Let's take another example. I'll. I'll teach you a session called like. Let's say Kung Fu, okay? It's a very good skill. So I'll teach you a Kung Fu skill, okay? So One, one coach is coming and telling you like, okay, so Jagdish, first you have to do this, you have to do this step. Then you have to do this when an attacker comes here. So you will have to just punch him here and then you have to block it here and, and then you can able to again attack him. And then you can become safeguarded. This is how you learn the skill. He's taking you to the field and then he's showing you a small demo. He's also holding your hands and then he's trying to help you. And then he's learning. Okay. Then he puts you in a like let's say a small kind of a guy who is a little weaker than you. And then he's trying to help you to learn that skill. Okay. Then a little bit stronger guy is coming, hitting, hitting, hitting. And then he's learned. Then he's teaching you advanced lesson. Then he's teaching you most what you call top lessons of the Kung fu. You are learning. This is one way of teaching. Okay. Second coach, what he's doing is this guy is bringing this guy to the field, okay. Then he's bringing the top guy who's good in the Kung fu, okay? Asking the guy, go and fight this guy. What happens? What happens? What happens? I want a reply from you. What happens? Typically if he is not trained or if he is not told anything, he is just coming and then I. He is asking to fight with this guy typically in the, in the, in the field. And then how to make a connection with foreign people. I don't understands how to share recruiter and potential candid guys. Fine, I'll answer you that. But first of all, let's, let's take this question first because you'll have to understand like let's say if that second coach is bringing this person directly into the field to go and fight with this guy, what happens? He will not be able to take the fight. He will be getting the beating, right? He'll be able to bring block him natural instance how he is going to block him. He will be able to block him, but he will be, he will be getting lot of beatings. And then the coach comes and says, see, now you got the beating right. So everybody tries to hit your face. Now try to cover your face. Okay. Second try to find his face when he's open and try to punch him. Okay. See now your, your, your. Your mouth is bleeding now. Okay? So what you have to do, you will have to first protect your face. You'll have to make sure. You are also finding the right spot to hit him. And then you be more speed than this guy and try to hit him. No. Now go. This guy will now first protect his face. Do you think this guy will forget about protecting his face? The coach has not learned told anything. Not taught, not put one exam, not put any kind of rot learning. But he has learned by his mistake, right? So what happens? He will never lift his face down. He will always keep it at that. Okay. And then he will be more anxious and more angry now because he already got the beating, right? So he will be in a more power to learn that. Okay. So he will do it. He will do it. Then he will teach. Okay. What you did is called blocking. And then what you did is called speed. And then you find the right space. And then you find the right thing. So this is what is the first lesson. Second lesson you will have to advance learn this. Third lesson, do this. Then you fight with the biggest fighter. See, two people are learning in this way. Who will be able to get maximum reward of this fight. Obviously the second one, right? So because he has learned a new pattern, maybe it is very uncomfortable at the start. But what happened? Yeah, it's definitely uncomfortable. But going along he understood and he was practicing more. Same like that. Guys, whatever you have as your earlier old pattern, like let's say people are telling rod learning sitting on the same topic, procrastination. If you do the same things again and then if you expect a different result, that is called insanity, stupidity. Albert Einstein calls. Okay, if you're connecting with the same person like that in LinkedIn. If you're not getting result, then obviously you have to change it, right? Don't do like a guy who's going and banging the head against the wall again and again and again. That's waste of time. If you are continuously approaching interviews and people are rejecting you. If you're continuously applying with the portfolio and people are rejecting you, then you will have to change the pat. You will have to unlearn. This is not working. Let me try with something else. Let me find out what are the mistake. Let me connect with my mentor. So this is the most most important skill. Guys. See, if you are not unlearning and if you are not relearning, you will be having lot of problems. So identify a role, practice, get feedback, challenge the assumptions. Okay? And relearning techniques, always stay updated. Guys, join programs. That's what I'm telling you. Continuously learn. Apply the new skills to your learning. Most, most important. Always have neuro City Neuroplasticity coming into use. Okay. Always try to rewire yourself constantly by asking questions. How do you really make it happen by asking questions? This is the only, only, only foolproof, bulletproof method which I ever found active recalling. I always ask you to go and comment on learnings, right? If you are recalling, you will know that your old patterns are getting away. Okay? You can use many mindful practices like let's say meditation focus. You do whatever is comfortable for you. That's up to you. Okay? But this is a technique to do it. If you're constantly unlearning and relearning, what happens? You will be like far more different guys. Okay? We can do it in design exercise, but we cannot do it now because it is very, very short call. And what happens when I used to give design learning is I used to give students one day project and ask them to do it live without even telling anything. And then we come back and then we discuss the kind of learning. What students exhibit is very different. Some of our students who are live here have did that. One of the guy called Shanti Lali has did one live project and he solved the problem and then he came home in one day. This guy has learned.
