Future of Design: Top AI Tools for Typeface Design in 2024 - Part 7

Jagdish walks through AI tools for typeface design, including Adobe Sensei and FontJoy, with practical demonstrations on how to use anti-aliasing and other techniques to speed up your work and improve the final result.
Welcome to this last day of typography. We are going to learn lot of AI tools and we are going to understand how using this AI tools, you can accelerate your work in typography, how you can master certain techniques, how you can use certain software which I am going to show you live and demo as well as how you can create your kerning, spacing, leading and how you can pair your fonts and how you can create anti aliasing very, very faster. Because these are all the nuances which will take a lot of time for you manually to do it. But with the AI tools, with the help of AI tools, you can accelerate your typeface journey in a faster way. Okay, let's jump in. We've been seeing about typeface, we've been seeing about aspects of typeface and technical aspects and experimenting with your own unconventional medium real time implementation of typography and scaling your projects using it and advanced techniques like ligations and differentiators. And there is another concept which we see ligacious as well as. Just a second, I can able to show you that.
Okay.
Ligations and alternates. But doing manually, all these things involves your manual effort and all these things involves your effort to particularly do and everything. Okay, but now I'm going to show you certain AI magical tools where you will see huge difference in how you can accelerate this journey in a faster way. Okay, let's jump into this. So first of all, if you have to learn about AI tools, there is an important principle called anti aliasing in typography. Okay. That also we are going to cover in this particular AI tools.
Okay.
It's not only that and already we have seen Google fonts, already we have seen many places where you can design systems where you can take the typeface from there and you can create new typeface families and you can accelerate. But using the power of AI tools, how you can leverage their advantage, you're going to see that.
Okay, Typography.
First of all, I'll tell you the application.
Okay.
AI tools largely help you in selection of the typeface. It helps you analyze the content and it will recommend you some tiles.
Okay.
And many times it's useful in pairing. This is what we are going to see. Little deep today.
Okay.
Automatic pairing happens in typeface that can complement each other's visual skills that can complement each other's visual outlook, which manually will take a lot of time for you to do.
Okay.
Automation, AI tools automate your repetitive tasks such as kerning, leading, adjustment, pitch of TAM type. Typeface, what you call padding itself will Take care, you don't have to break your head. Thousands of combinations with the AI model will work and it will provide you. Okay, you're going to see that. And also it provides you a content personalization dynamically. It's adjust your typist based on your need and context, enhancing the overall user experience. Okay, you need to get a clarity. Let's understand what is this tools about? The first tool, what I'm going to show you is Adobe Sensei.
Okay.
On Adobe Sensei is a AI and machine learning platform which integrates into Adobe Creative Cloud.
Okay.
Actually it's a paid software. If people are using it, they can try it out. But other people, you can try other tools which I'll also recommend you, which is free of cost.
Okay.
But Adobe Sensei pretty much does it. It assists you in automating this repetitive task, enhancing the workflow very, very faster. It provides user and design suggestions as well. The feature of this particular Adobe sensor is it automatically recognizes the font, its style, it transfers the style of kind of layout and components and an asset so that you can replicate it with all of your skins which typically available in Figma and other things as well. But this does it for AI based workflow. You will see the huge difference between a normal workflow and AI workflow.
Okay.
And it recommends you some content as well. I'll tell you guys, the impact what it is creating is reduces the time of the design is significantly higher.
Okay.
All these mundane tasks could be avoided. You can focus on creativity. And there is another tool called what fonts?
Okay.
So this is the AI tool which identifies which font can be used for your image, what you're generating using the AI. It helps designers to find out the exact font which is required for their project at that particular point of time. Yeah, the feature is it can make an automatic AI search for you. It can identify the right tools for you and it can create a very good database for you as well. And yeah, it provides you lot of iterations, it saves your time exploration and then it will be very, very faster for you to implement in real time. There is another tool called Design Space.
Okay.
I've not tested this tool, but I've heard that this is really a good tool. You can try it out. It's a AI design tool which offers typography and layout suggestion based on the context of the project. You can try it out.
Okay.
The features is, it is a real time suggestion will be given. I heard that this is good for adaptive layouting and responsive screens. You can try it out okay. And there are a lot of proven methods and templates which is already available there. You can, you can very well apply in your projects and try and it's all based on the content based typography recommendation and it enhances the design productivity as well as it provides some recommendations as well. Because there is a big huge library available there. I have not used it, but you can try it out and it reduces your cognitive load majorly. When a designer is developing a project, these are all the things which is hindering him during his design, during his process of design. If these things are automated properly, majority of our workload is off. That's why our cognitive load gets reduced and then we will be able to produce a far more greater creative output, guys. Okay, understand this. So these are all the important thing. I'm going to show you another tool called Font Joy.
Okay?
This uses deep learning to generate font pairing that aesthetically pleasing as well as help designers find out that particular combination and harmonious font. It helps you in suggestions of the font fairing of the font and adjusting the contrast and blending the style. I'm going to show you live now, okay? It impacts in a greater way, guys. It simplifies your process, it ensures consistency and also my favorite, harmony. You will not hit the harmony, guys, if you don't understand this particular word. The reason being a lot of people don't do font pairing with the help of AI tools which I'm going to show you now in this thing, okay, you can type in the Google Font Joy. I'm just sharing the screen with you. You can find it out. Okay, this is the spelling, guys. You can take a screenshot. You can do it once. If you go into this particular thing, everything is already automated. All you have to do is choose whichever is really suitable for you. There will be three different type of typeface available here, as you can see here.
Okay.
And this can be adjusted if you want to choose any kind of a style. If you want to choose any kind of a, what you call slant or the space or whatever is your thickness and weight of the typeface, you can able to choose it. Like let's say I want to choose this kind of a one, okay? You automatically go there and if you want to change for the Lora font, okay, you can go and find it out. Okay, let's do this. Okay. Okay, let's say I wanted to do this for another typeface which is like a. Something like a thin. Okay, so now see, look at what happened. It actually adjusted for a different padding availability which is already there. Okay, See, look. Now there are three typeface available here. And you can lock this typeface if you don't want. Okay, Options is there. It's a very simple user interface, guys.
Okay.
Basically what it does is the moment when three typefaces there it will automatically generate a content for you. You can directly use this particular font in your projects. It is all proven with padding. It's all proven with a proper cunning. It's all proven with a proper harmony between these three typefaces. Many people choose headings subheadings with a different typeface, right? That's completely wrong. What happens is there is no harmony between the typeface in your own documentation. What you have this type padding application, this font joy helps you align what kind of heading you can have, what kind of a subheadings you can have, what kind of the text you can have inside it and how this font is exactly looks like a family. This is what font joy does. You know what font joy, how it works? I'm showing you.
Okay.
See, typically it chooses a font automatically based on a machine learning platform. See font padding in design. Font pairing with machine learning. Okay, so font padding is a classical problem in design world. Different font can be used to draw attention, let the eye and even from a foundation to a brand identity. And what exactly is a good font pairing and what pairing has worked with lot of designers across the industry and how it is making a rhythmic harmonic balance in the eyes of others and how it is very similar and how it can seamlessly flow across your website, across your application, across your documentation, across your portfolio, across your case study, anything. So this is why font pairing is very important.
Okay.
There are many advantages guys go and read this. In fact they have a font map which can able to map all of these things and they will itself suggest you certain font. Okay, see you can find out there is another interesting thing here.
Okay?
You can go to GitHub and you can directly import all these elements and you can find font visualizer like how the font is getting visualized and you can even create logo. But I'm not here to tell you that. I'm just here to show you what is font firing and how this particular AI tools helps.
Okay?
The reason why we can't change this is this is the best proven font padding which the machine learning is suggesting. If you don't like this entire padding, you can't change this. You can modify the slide and slant and thickness of the font everything. But ultimately you can't Change the type. If you wanted to change this, you have to go here and click Generate. It will create another pattern for you. See route. Another three set of font came. See cabin prompt humans new ones.
Okay.
The moment if you're clicking this, it'll show you what is this typeface about. It will automatically go to Google Font. Okay, It'll automatically go to Google Font and it will show you this is the typeface. This is the reason. This is where it's in. And you can able to get this font and you can try it out. So this is an explanation about font. But ultimately this will itself take that suggestion. That's why it's an AI tool. It's relatively faster. Okay, if you don't like this, you can click here. You can find out the total style, what you want to do. Let's say if it's a 900 oblique, you want to create that. So see how this heading has come now you can create a balanced contrast, very, very similar. Let's say if you want more similar font, you can create this. If you want somewhat like a balanced or somewhat like an extreme high contrast, you want completely heading to be in a different font. Your subheading to be in a different font, your text could be in a different one. You want to create that what you call entropy in your project. That's also aesthetic element. Okay, you can create a little imbalance or asymmetry. Maybe that's your style element. You can now create, generate. See, look what happens. The heading, the subheading and the text is completely different, right? And you can able to modify as well. So this kind of a tool really, really helps you a lot less. I've given you one case study, but I would highly, highly recommend you can go and find it out. There are many tools which I've suggested you Adobe Sensei, what fonts design space, fontjoy. Because these tools will help you accelerate the font in a faster way. You don't have to work on kerning, you don't have to work on spacing, you don't have to work on landing everything. It's all pruned. Go to Google Fonts, come to fontjoy. Generate a font, use it in your projects. It saves huge amount of your time, guys. It saves at least 50% of your time. Whatever you put, you are in your projects in a case study in a way and you will have a proper justification why this font is used. Because you can take from the Google and you can know in our earlier videos we talked about how Google Font we can able to Find out and what is the reason why certain fonts are used in the industry and why it is used in majority of the world. In the designers and lot of people are engaging, millions of designers, millions of people are engaging in this font to do this application. You will have some justification why did you choose this font. And with that you can create a very good documentation to go ahead. Now you're understanding the power of AI. I hope you are okay. There is another technique called anti aliasing. Okay, what does it mean by anti aliasing Jagdish? This is a technique used in digital typography. This is to smoothen the edges. What happens when your design is flowing across different screens? When your design is flowing across different devices, what happens is many of your typeface will not really look good. That is why the sharpening of smoothening of the sharp edges is very important. Let's say when you take sans based font, okay, you will have that problem, you will have that legs. Because of that, you will have the problems. If you are able to smoothen that, it will flow across many responsive websites, application devices, tablet, mobile, tv, laptop, everything. That is why this anti aliasing technique is done. Again, it is a very deep subject. Going to show you what are the basics of it.
Okay.
You can try it out using the tools which I'm recommending you, which is definitely industry proven and market leading tools. Okay, so technique used in digital typography to smoothen the edges of the font and it reduces the jag. It just. I told you, right? Because of this the pixelates will happen. So what is this technique? You have to use a technique called super sampling. I'm going to explain you sub pixel rendering, multi sampling. So what is this super sampling, Jagdish? It looks like something like a sample. See, it is actually anti aliasing technique which I told you to smoothen. It involves rendering the image at a higher resolution. And what happens is this takes multiple samples and then it will downsize the sample and then it will tell you which sample is the best for using in multiple places and it will provide you look how beautiful it is. You don't have to worry much. You can use this super sampling technique and based on that desired resolution, whatever is required, it will prove you. Now what happens is developer chooses a decision and designers initially make one choice and the end of the day the graphics will crash, the font will not move. The user experience will be terribly bad. Have you seen in many applications very poor. Some of the even the government websites I've seen. It's not proven Properly there the text will be in a different way. The typeface will not move properly. The responsiveness is very poor. People who don't understand this, their user experience will be really bad. Super sampling is a good technique and you can use it with many softwares. Guys.
Okay.
You don't have to do it manually. I'm going to suggest you AI tools.
Okay.
So this particularly helps in reducing the jarred out edges and and provide a high quality image. The technique how to do it is this renders the image at a high resolution and down samples it. I told you. This is the adaptive super sampling technique which increases the sampling rate with a high detailing and contrast to optimize your performance. There is a software called Photoshop guys. A lot of people might know it. Photoshop does it in an image manipulation way and it enhances your resolution in a faster way. There are 3D rendering engines which is like Unity, Unreal Engine Blender. Blender has a beautiful feature. You can try it out okay. And have the settings to enable super sampling at a higher quality renders. When you're taking the final output screen in rendering, you can adjust the sampling rate. It will provide you best sampling which is suitable for that resolution. And it'll suggest you whether it's a high quality or low quality or mid. Based on that, you can able to propagate in a different mediums and different platforms. If you're a developer, you will know all these things very clearly. And your graphic drivers like Nvidia Nvidia AMD graphics include settings for this enabling this particular super sampling in games and applications. Okay, this is a little technical part of it, but let's not worry. Let's only worry about the basic techniques. What's apply next is called subpixel rendering. Using this only anti aliasing is done. Guys. See, this is a technique that takes advantage of the physical properties of a display screen, particularly LCDs to increase the apparent resolution and smoothness of the text and image.
Okay.
It is actually based on a rendering technique, super pixel rendering. So what it does is it optimizes a text display by manipulating individual sub pixels. This is how you get a very pixel quality grade in your output whenever you're designing a mobile app or an application.
Okay.
It uses a technique which is for font smoothening and it will operate in a rendered way so that the text can able to provide a proper output. Because if the rendering is not happening properly in a pixel level, your output will not come good no matter what super font you select. Super graphics you make end of the day. If this is not done properly, then you will not get a clarity. There are many software to use it, but Microsoft Clear Typetuner. Again guys, this is not all the software. You will not be able to use it. The industry uses it. But get an awareness of it many times. You can use many softwares like Google Fonts. This what you call Font Joy which I showed you as a case study. You can use Adobe Sensei, you can use Photoshop, but other tools you don't have to use. It's already there in the market.
Okay.
Mac OS Font smoothening. Adobe Illustrator this uses sub pixel rendering for high quality text display. So these are all the sum of the rendering techniques which can be used in order to create a proper sub pixel based clarity. Okay, there is something called multi sampling which is very similar to the super sampling. But this is a technique that reduces aliasing by sampling multiple points within each pixel.
Okay.
See inside the pixel itself it is choosing multiple ways to find out which is optimal. After this the pixel gets rendered. After this the super sampling creates and this entire three principle work together to create a beautiful anti aliasing technique. And software itself does it. Guys, you don't have to break your head. This method is less computational intensive than super sampling, but still provides a significant qualitative improvements. And the software which is used Here are actually 3D rendering engines like let's say I told you Unity, Unreal and Blender. And you can people are using DirectX OpenGL support. So these are all the settings which has been kept in that particular sampling techniques. And with that technique it renders a high quality image and it provides you the output.
Okay.
Many of the things whatever explained you happens inside the software. You don't have to even break your head much. Okay, I just told you because you need to know the importance of it. It provides the consistency across different devices. That's the ultimate point here. Why we are doing all these things is to make sure it is seamlessly available in all the devices. It enhances the readability. Ultimately that's the functionality, usability and accessibility feature. And visually appealing striking. The beautiful harmony and low resolution screens can also be loaded. And it has a huge importance in aesthetic appeal. Particularly it's smooth in the edges, right? Look how the typeface looks when the edges are smooth. And it looks so great. It look ultimate clarity because you will itself be very feeling comfortable. Oh wow. This is actually creating a great difference. I'm really so I'm liking this. My customer is going to like it. My customer is going to Visually like it, okay. But that particular beauty will come and it'll look, it'll make a very polished and professional look for your brand and it enhances the readability because ultimately if the text is not readable, there is no point in giving a word called typography. Everything, whatever you're doing is to make sure the readability is good, functionality is good, okay? Everything else is wraparound around it. So anti aliasing ensures the text is legible and easy to read, improving the overall user experience. If you understand this anti aliasing technique only guys, you will be able to understand how the typeface is evolving. If you're not understanding the trend what is happening currently, you will not be able to understand what's going to happen in the future.
Okay.
Why this particular trends are really shaping the future of the AI future shaping the future of typography is you need to know there are a lot of AI tools which has already automated a lot of people, lot of design studios, lot of industries. If you're not learning that there is a high chance which you will get replaced by someone who knows all these things, I will not tell AI will come and sit and do all these things. But I'll say someone who is very good in operating these AI tools will definitely replace. Think about it, okay? Adaptive typography, generative design, augmented reality, voice, gesher control, enhanced accessibility. So these are all the future of the typeface guys. So AI will enable typeface to adapt in real time. It will help you build generative design, it helps you build AR VR experiences in a more environmental way so that you can able to create a huge aesthetic experience for your customer. It improves the user interface to a next level called voice level, gesher control, RTAP controls, haptic controls. It will enhance you further and it enhances your accessibility. Also provides automatically adjusting the typeface and layout for the users and visual impinement. In the future there will be websites, there will be website which will automatically synchronize its typeface, which will automatically synchronize its anti aliasing techniques based on the viewers preference. So that level of automation, people are already working on it. It's going to come in the next two, three years, guys. It's not something like 100 years after that. No. If you are not understanding this, you won't be able to take the trend advantage of this thing. That's why I'm bringing this. Okay, let's see some stat because you need to know why we are ultimately doing this, right? Adobe reports that Adobe Sensei saves 70% of the time of the designers in a routine task. Shady shows that personalized content, including adaptive typography can increase your user engagement by up to 50 percentage because that is the beauty of adaptability. AI tools ensure typographic consistency across different platforms which is very, very crucial for maintaining brand identity. Design systems and guidelines, style guides, design components, all those things are systemized format, right? If you are making, if you're not making consistent design, there is no point in using all these tools because these tools are help you to make your repetitive task automated automated task in a more scalable way, more scalable task in a systemized way of your design system. Whatever is followed in your industry the moment, if you understand this, I'm telling you guys, you will have so much of clarity in delivering your output and you will see huge impact in your work. I'm going to give you some activities, guys. With that we are going to close this session, okay? We are going to close this video. Use AI tool for your typographic design. Understand the role of typography, okay? Use any one AI tool you can use FontJoy, you can use anything, okay? Do the steps exactly so that you will be guided properly. Select a tool first. Either Adobe Sensei or FontJoy. Design a project first create a typeface design such as logo, poster, web page layout, whatever. In your existing project implement this AI suggestions, use whatever is that AI typeface suggestion, whatever is being given and then refine your design. Present your findings in this video. Let me read each and every comment and view your work and give you feedback guys. Because that what makes me really happy that you have taken an action after this video and then you have submitted the work. I'll make sure I'll reach every comment, I'll read every comment, I'll read and review all the work and then I'll reply you personally if you have any kind of improvements and doubts which will come only after I give a review guys. Because listening to this video on going will not change you anything. Taking action, getting correction from your mentors will only get a big difference in you, okay? And the outcome will be you will gain a huge experience in AI tools and practically you will become a master in AI tools, guys, okay? I hope this video would have added a great value in this entire typeface from the day one to day seven. And I have closed with the AI tools also so that you can automate and accelerate your process. I wish you all the best in implementing these things and comment me in this video what you think about this and write your top learnings don't write. This video is good. This video is bad. Write what you really learned. Write what you did not like. Also write what I can improve the future also. That is the true outcome of watching this video. Okay, thank you so much, guys. We'll see you in another set of video. Bye Bye. Have a great day.
