Being a generalist is keeping you broke

Jacob Morgan argues that dog trainers trying to serve all breeds and problems stay broke. He recommends niching down to one breed or specific issue like reactivity or separation anxiety. Targeted marketing builds authority, attracts clients willing to pay premium prices, and increases profitability.

There's an old proverb that says, the man who chases many rabbits catches none. Right now, your business is that man or woman, you're in a field full of rabbits and you're trying to catch all of them. And your website says we train all breeds, all ages, all problems. You post content about puppy biting one day, your generic dog daycare the next day, and you are running yourself ragged, chasing everything that moves and you're gonna catch nothing. Your audience isn't growing and you're not seen as an expert. And you're competing with every other generalist trainer in a race to the bottom on price. Today, we're gonna stop the madness. I'm gon. Being a generalist is the slowest, hardest and least profitable way to build a business. And how picking just one rabbit and niching down will give you a crazy unfair advantage. Almost every trainer I work with is terrified niching down. The fear is immediate and visceral. But if I only focus on German shepherds, I'll lose out on all the Labrador clients. If only I focus on reactivity, I'll miss out on all the puppy clients. This fear is based on a lie. It's the scarcity mindset that keeps you broke. By trying to be everything to everyone, you become nothing to no one. Your message is diluted, your content generic and you're marketing it becomes invisible when a desperate cockapoo owner with resource guarding problems lands on your website and they see you talking about 20, 30, 40 different breeds. Do you know what they think? They think this person really doesn't understand my problem and they're going to click away. You're trying to catch all the rabbits and they're all getting away. Imagine a different scenario. Imagine you are the cockapoo trainer. Your entire social media presence, your website, your content is all about cockapoos. You have videos titled 5 reasons your cockapoo is reactive. The real reason your cockapoo resource SC Cockapoo versus Cocker spaniel. What's the difference? When the same desperate cockapoo owner finds you, they feel like they found the holy grail. They binge all your content because it speaks directly to their soul. You are not just a trainer, you are their trainer. This is where the magic happens. You need to understand a critical piece of owner psychology. Every owner believes their dog is a special snowflake and they think their breed is unique, their problem is unique and that a generalist just won't understand. Stop fighting this belief and lean into it. When you niche down, you are telling the owner you're right. Dog is special. And I'm the specialist who can solve your special problems. Suddenly, you're not just competing on price. You are not just another trainer. You are the category king or queen. You are the only logical choice. So how do you do it? You pick one rabbit and you go all in one. Pick a breed. What breed do you see the most? What breed do you love working with? Spaniels? Doodles? What breed do you have? German shepherds, maybe? Pick one. Become the go to expert for that breed. Your goal is to cook up an audience full of owners of that specific breed. 2. You could pick a problem. Alternatively, you can niche down, become the reactivity guy or girl or the separation anxiety gal or guy, the puppy expert. You own a problem so completely, the other trainers start referring their difficult cases to you. Once you've picked your rabbit, your entire business becomes simpler and more efficient. Content creation is easy. You know exactly what to talk about. Marketing is targeted. You know exactly who you're speaking to. Sales are effortless. Clients come to you pre sold because they already see you as an expert. I had to learn this the hard way. We built a huge generalist audience and that was a constant struggle. The moment we started niching on reactivity specifically, our business exploded. And ultimately it's the fast track to authority and profitability. Stop chasing all the rabbits. It's exhausting and you'll end up with an empty bag. Pick one, go deep. Become the undeniable expert in one specific area and I promise you, you will not lose clients. You will actually gain way more clients who are willing to pay a premium price for your specialized knowledge. You will build a targeted, engaged audience faster than you ever thought was possible. This is the core of what we teach inside our mentorship program. We get you out of the generalist, TR defined your profitable niche and we help you build the systems to dominate it.
