Don't Post Again Until You Watch This Video...

Jacob Morgan argues that dog trainers should prioritize long-form YouTube content over short-form social posts (e.g., Instagram reels). He claims long-form builds deeper trust, acts as evergreen marketing assets that continue generating leads, reduces creative burden, and provides more honest engagement metrics; he closes with a mentorship pitch to help trainers scale to higher revenues.

You are addicted to creating content that is designed to die. Think about it. You spend hours brainstorming, filming and editing 30 second reel. You post it, you get a quick hit of likes, comments, dopamine, and then, well, nothing. 24 hours later, it's gone, it's vanished into the algorithm graveyard. You're on a content treadmill and you have to create something new every single day just to stay relevant. But what if I told you that the biggest and most successful dog trainers on the planet are playing a complete, completely different game? What if I told you, once upon a time I had 300,000 followers on Instagram and willingly chose to start from zero on a new platform because I knew the short form game was a trap. And to be honest, it was the best decision I ever made for our business. And today I'm going to show you why. Prioritizing long form content on platforms like YouTube is the single most powerful shift you can make to build a sustainable and profitable dog training business. During the COVID era, the marketing pendulum swung hard towards short form content. It was new, it was exciting and it worked. But that era is over. We are now in what I call a trust recession. Your audience is more skeptical than ever. They are bombarded with ads, gurus, lead magnets, quick fix promises. And the only way to overcome the trust recession is to build deep, meaningful relationships with your audience. And you can't do that in 30 second increments. This is where long form content becomes your ultimate unfair advantage. Here's why. First, let's talk about the depth of the relationship. I would much rather, rather have 100 views on a long YouTube video than 10,000 views on an Instagram reel. Why? Because a 10 minute YouTube video is a consultation. When someone chooses to spend that amount of time with you, they are building a level of trust that is almost impossible to replicate via short form content. A single good YouTube video can build a relationship equivalent to months of Instagram posting. They don't just see you, they get to know you. They trust you. And they are infinitely more likely to take you up on your services. Second, short form content is disposable. It has a lifespan of maybe like a week if you're lucky. Long form content is an evergreen asset. Some of our best performing videos on YouTube, the ones that bring in clients every single week, are like years old. They are assets that work for us 24, 7, 365 days a year. And even if we take a month off. Your Instagram feed is a content treadmill. Your YouTube channel is a library of trust building assets that grows in value over time. Third, Instagram requires like constant momentum. If you stop posting every day, your reach just absolutely plummet. Your business can literally die if you go and take a holiday. YouTube doesn't care about momentum in the same way. Because your videos are evergreen and discoverable through search, your channel can continue to grow and generate leads when you're not actively posting and you actually build a system instead of just feeding an algorithm. This leads me to the content burden. To stay relevant on Instagram, you need a new idea every single day. That's seven ideas a week. With YouTube, you only need one good idea idea a week or even like one every two weeks. You can go much deeper, provide more value and create a much more impactful piece of content with less creative strain. Finally, the growth metrics are completely different. It's easier to grow organically on YouTube because it's like a search engine. And if you understand how to correctly title your videos and create compelling thumbnails, you will be discovered. Furthermore, the metrics are honest on YouTube. To count as a view on YouTube, someone has to watch at least 30 seconds of your video so you get a much more accurate picture of who is actually engaging with your content. On Instagram, a one second scroll by can count as a view. So they're artificially inflated. Now I know what you're thinking, but I don't have time to create long form videos. And my response to that is simple. If you don't have time to create assets that will grow your business for you and future you, then you don't have a content problem, you have a business model problem. If you are so caught up in the day to day grind of low paying sessions and and what I call distraction services like your puppy classes and your walk and trains and your, I don't know, whatever else you're offering and you can't just invest in like one or two hours a week into building long term assets, then you're already in a trap. And the only way out of that is to fix the structural problems in your business. The pendulum has swung. The future of marketing for experts like us is in building deep trust. And the most effective way to do that is long format content. Stop wasting your energy on a content treadmill that is designed to die. Start building a library of assets that will work for you for years to come. If you're ready to fix the structural problem in your business and you can already train a dog and you already have an established business and you can already solve people's problems. I want to be very clear there. Our mentorship program is designed to help you hit your first 10k or maybe even tag on the next 10k or maybe even the next three 10ks after that.
