The Number 1 Mistake Keeping Dog Trainers from Growing their Business

A YouTube video by Jacob Morgan arguing that dog trainers should stop selling single sessions and instead sell upfront-paid transformation packages. Using a personal anecdote (True Detective) he explains five principles—commitment creates results, improved business model, delivering true transformation, ethical responsibility, and upfront cash flow—and invites viewers to join his mentorship program.

I'm gonna tell you a quick story. A few months ago, I was scrolling through a streaming service and I saw a new show called True Detective. The reviews were incredible. I asked a couple of my friends, I even asked ChatGPT if it was any good. People were saying it was one of the best series ever made. So I took a chance and I paid 18 pound for the entire first season up front. I got through episode one and then episode two, and honestly, like, I wasn't impressed. It was slow, the plot wasn't really moving, and if I hadn't already paid for the whole thing, I would have quit right there and then and gone to watch something else. But because I had invested skin in the the game, I felt committed. So I pushed through to episode three and then episode four. And that's where it happened. The story clicked, the characters deepened, and it turned into one of the best shows I'd ever watched. And I don't regret a second of it. And it taught me the single most important lesson about selling dog training. Today I'm going to share that lesson with you because it's the key to stopping clients from quitting and finally building a profitable, sustainable dog training business. That same feeling I had with True Detective is the exact same feeling your clients might have in session one or too. We as dog trainers know that the foundation work is the most critical part. Maybe the building the food, motivation, conditioning, markers, your focus, games. It can be a little slow, right? It's not always that exciting. And in a world that craves instant results, your clients, they can get bored, they can think this isn't working and they can disappear. They quit before they get to episode three and they never see that breakthrough. They never experience. The transformation that you know as a dog trainer is just around the corner. And this is why selling single pay as you go sessions is one of the most damaging things you can do for your business and your clients. You are setting them up to fail. The solution is to stop selling sessions altogether and start selling packages with upfront payment. And it's not just about the money. It's about five core principles that will transform your business. First and most importantly is the true detective principle. Commitment creates results. When a client pays for a full package transformation up front, they are mentally and financially invested in seeing it through. They will push through the boring foundation work. They will do their homework dog. They will show up to every session because of just like I did, they have skin in the game. You are not just a dog trainer they see on a Tuesday. You are an investment they have made into theirs and their dog's future. By the way, you should only be watching this channel and trying to figure out how to make more money if you can already solve problems. I wanted this to be very clear. Do not take anything from this channel if you can't already deliver these life changing results for clients. If you need that, go ahead to my other YouTube channel. You'll be able to find that easily. Or click the link in the description and join our dog trainer development program where you can upskill yourself there. Just wanted to get that out of the way. Second, it completely transforms your business model. Let's do some simple math. If you're selling single sessions, you might need 10, 15, maybe even 20 clients a month just to make ends meet. You're constantly chasing the next lead, dealing with endless admin and last minute cancellations. But when you sell high ticket transformation packages, you might only need 3 to 5 new clients to hit your first 10k month. You work with fewer, more committed people, which means less administrative, more focused and predictable stable income. Thirdly, it allows you to deliver a real transformation, not just marginal improvement. We don't want to make a dog slightly less reactive. We want to give the owner the dog of their dreams. A package gives you the time to do that. But what if their dog is like, pretty good by session three? Amazing. Don't stop there. You use the remaining sessions for generalization. You take that German shepherd that was reactive and get him walking calmly through a busy town. Maybe you take him to the pup and give the owner that first pint they dreamed of when they first picked their puppy up from the breeder. You go for the dream outcome, the dog playing happily off a leash at the beach. This is what a transformation looks like. And you can only get there when you have the time that a full package provides. Fourth, and I really want you to hear this, selling a package is more ethical. It is not an unethical thing to do. In fact, it's the complete opposite. We know as experts the commitment is required to get results. We know that the real change happens in the later sessions. By allowing a client to quit after one or two sessions, we're taking their money and letting them fail. By requiring commitment up front, we are holding them accountable to the results they told us they wanted. It's in their best interest. And finally, the obvious one, you get paid cash up front. This improves your cash flow, it makes your income more predictable, and it removes the stress of chasing invoices. It's a simple, powerful benefit that allows you to focus on what you do best training dogs. So I want you to stop thinking of yourself as someone that sells sessions. You are a consultant. You are an expert. You sell solutions. You sell transformations. And the vehicle for that transformation is a high ticket program that demands commitments. This is one of the core principles we teach inside our mentorship program. We show dog trainers how to stop being that commodity and start building a real business by structuring, pricing, marketing, correctly selling high end tickets, and ultimately understand back end selling systems. If you are tired of clients quitting, if you are tired of the financial roller coaster and you're ready to start selling transformations, I want to invite you to learn more. Hit the link in the description and check out our mentorship program. Stop letting your clients quit before they get to the good part. Demand the commitment and deliver the transformation.
