Helen Wellings and technician Jarrad Goulding test microwaves for radiation leaks. Some ovens exceed Australia's safety standard of 5 milliwatts per square centimetre, leaking two to three times the safe level. Warped doors, broken latches, and clogged seals are the main culprits. Microwave radiation won't cause cancer but can burn skin, putting pregnant women and children at highest risk.
