ChatGPT's search volume now exceeds Yahoo's, though Google still gets over 300 times more searches. Google faces an innovator's dilemma that could fragment the market, and its dominance may slip below 90% as users split time between ChatGPT and Google. Search will gradually shift toward AI-generated answers rather than links.
Today, ChatGPT search is ahead of Yahoo search.
Meaning more people are searching on ChatGPT than Yahoo.
Exactly. Google is 300+ times larger from a searches standpoint compared to ChatGPT. I believe Google has an innovator's dilemma right now. I think what's going to happen is search is going to fragment. By the way, the users who use ChatGPT also use Google. I think Google will remain its dominance. I don't think it's going to have 90% market share. It's going to slip. But I still think it's a critical modality to optimize for. What the data shows is users are loving Gemini and AI overviews. My hunch is that they're going to go where the data and the dollars are and integrate more and more. I just think the way we use Google is going to slowly change. It's not going to be an overnight change because that's going to cost them their business.
