Meditation for the Over-Functioning Woman
14 Sept 2026 · 18 min
In this solo guided meditation, Kris Plachy addresses high‑achieving, hyper‑vigilant women who habitually over‑function to meet others’ needs. She begins by inviting listeners to find a comfortable position, close their eyes, and simply notice that they are doing nothing—no problem‑solving, no list‑checking, just breathing. The meditation repeatedly emphasizes that worth is not tied to productivity, usefulness, or being needed, and that resting does not diminish value. Listeners are guided through progressive body relaxation, encouraged to observe the inner critic that urges them back to action, and invited to contemplate reflective questions such as “Who am I when nobody needs anything from me?” The practice reframes the over‑functioning identity as a skill that can be loosened, highlighting that women’s innate hyper‑vigilance often stems from societal expectations and biological wiring. Throughout, Plachy affirms that the listener is inherently worthy, deserving of rest, joy, and presence, and that the true gift of life is not constant effort but the ability to simply be. The meditation concludes with a final breath, an invitation to carry the experience forward as a memory rather than another task.

For today's podcast, I'd like to try something a little different. I did this once before on my previous podcast, but I want to give you a meditation, specifically a meditation for what I'm calling the over-functioning woman. I think we all can relate to that— hyper-producing, over-functioning, high-achieving. Striving, highly sensing, overreading the room all the time, addressing everyone's needs first before your own. My goal here is to create something you can return to, to remind you about you. So to begin, Find somewhere comfortable to sit or lie down. You don't need to sit a certain way. There's no right or wrong here. Just be comfortable. We just need to know that there's nothing that will interrupt you for the next few minutes. In fact, this really is the whole point, is to just be for a moment. So just get comfortable. Close your eyes if that feels good. And if that feels safe, take a deep breath in and let it out. Take another breath in and let it out. And before we go any further, I want you to notice something. I want you to notice that you're doing nothing right now. You're not fixing anything. You're not solving anything. You're not helping anyone. You're not making anything better. You're not getting ahead. You're not checking something off a list. You're simply here, breathing, existing. And I want you to notice what happens inside of you when I say that. Maybe it feels wonderful. Maybe it feels uncomfortable. Maybe there's already a little voice reminding you of something you should be doing, something you forgot. Something you need to handle when this is over. That's okay. You don't need to make that voice go away. Just notice it and breathe and stay right here for these next few minutes. Nothing and nobody needs you. There's nowhere else you need to be. You do not need to use this time well. You do not need to get anything out of this meditation. You don't need to become better because you listen to it. You're simply allowed to be here. Take another breath, and as you exhale, see if you can soften your body just a little. Unclench your jaw. Take the tongue off the roof of your mouth. Release your shoulders. Relax your hands. Let your belly soften. Let your feet relax. You've spent a lot of your life being so incredibly capable. You know how to get things done. You take responsibility. You know how to anticipate what people need. You know how to solve problems. You really do carry a lot because you're good at it, and others know it. Those abilities have served you. They have helped you create so many incredible things. You've built things, you've cared for people, you've led people. You've achieved things you're proud of when you give yourself the opportunity to feel it. We're not here to get rid of that part of you, and we're certainly not here to make her be wrong. We're just here to remind her that she really is more than what she can carry, more than what she can accomplish, more than what she can produce. More than what she can solve. So breathe and just be. Just for this moment, just put it all down. You can pick it up later if you choose, but right now, just be you. You don't have to hold everything all the time. It's not going to fall apart. Being useful or not doesn't change your value. Being productive or not doesn't change your value. Being needed or not doesn't change your value. You are worthy just as you are, and you are worthy of others in your life who know that. You are you, and that will always be enough. Your worth is not diminished because you step away from producing. Your worth is never going to disappear because you say no to helping. You don't become less important if someone else takes care of it other than you. You don't become less lovable when someone doesn't Call on you or need you. You don't become irresponsible because you rest. You are not lazy if you stop. You don't have to earn your peace. You don't have to earn your rest. You don't have to earn your pleasure. And you certainly don't have to earn your own life. Take a breath. There's a part of you that may argue. That part of you has been with you a long time. She learned a long time ago to create value, to create her worth in In the eyes of others, she needed to be dependable. She needed to produce. She needed to solve. She needed to step in. She needed to be the answer to everyone's questions. But she's tired. She's so tired. We need to let her, the part of you who has been proving for so long, to know that you are proud of her. And that she can loosen her grip now. That the real gift of being alive is not effort, production, achievement. Sure, those are all contributors to how we experience life And it is so fun to set a goal, to push ourselves to achieve something we never thought was possible, to be that example of when we put potential with skill and effort, what comes out. We take joy in helping others, in being of service. Nothing is wrong with that, but somewhere— We started over-functioning. Hypervigilance took over. Our nervous system never rests. It's why for most of us, we haven't had a long, deep, restful sleep since before our first child or dependent came into our life. Women are wired to know if something is amiss. We sense it before we understand it. And so learning how to release that is a practice. It isn't a skill. And it isn't something you can just wave away. It is a practice like what we are doing right now. Breathe in. Breathe out. I know that you will say things really do depend on me. People really do depend on me. There really is a lot to do, and maybe all of that is true. So I'm not pretending that it isn't. I'm not asking you to. I'm simply here to remind you that something else is also true, that you are a person. You are a beautiful woman inside of that life. You are not simply the person responsible for maintaining it, for being the glue. I'm not. That keeps it together. You are not a machine designed to make everything work. You are a woman living a life, your life, the only one you'll get. You are allowed to experience it. Dare say, savor it. Not just manage and get through it. Breathe. I want you to ask yourself a question, and you don't need to force the answer. Just let the question sit. Who am I when I don't believe I'm being useful? Who am I when nobody needs anything from me? Who am I when there is nothing to solve or prove? Who am I when I stop measuring the day by what I accomplished, or more likely what I didn't? Just notice what comes up here. For many of us, we don't know, and that's okay. You don't have to know. Maybe that's enough now to know it's something to learn. Maybe there is this beautiful woman underneath all that responsibility who you haven't spent much time with lately. A woman with preferences and desires and curiosity and ideas and dreams and wishes for pleasure and humor. Humor and wisdom. A woman who wants experiences and things just because she wants them. Not because she's supposed to. Not because it makes her more productive. Not because someone else needs it. Just because. Let yourself imagine just giving that woman a little more room. You don't have to change your whole life today. You don't have to quit anything. You don't have to make a big decision, and you don't need a plan. You're simply practicing something. You're practicing being valuable without producing. You're practicing being worthy without proving. You're You are practicing being loved without being needed. You are practicing being here without feeling you have to earn it. Just breathe. If your mind has wandered back to the list, just bring it back. It will all still be there. You know that's true. It's always there. This body, this breath, this beautiful spirit of yours. She is a unique fingerprint on this life. She is special. She is. She is worthy simply because she is. She is worthy simply because she is. I do not have to earn my own worth. I am valuable when I'm producing, and I am valuable when I am not. I am worthy when I am helping, and I am worthy when I am resting. I am still me when nobody needs me. I am allowed to want. I'm allowed to rest. I'm allowed to enjoy my life. I'm allowed to exist without making myself useful all the time. Take a breath and remind yourself as you go through this day, as you settle into this evening, There is no amount of overproduction that generates worthiness. And the one thing, if anything, that everyone who loves you needs from you is your energy, your joy, your presence. A rested mind, a rested body, your health, your wellness. You are a precious vessel. You are not here to fill in the blanks and solve for everything that comes your way. You are here also to enjoy your own journey. You belong right where you are. You are already worthy, even if you do absolutely nothing today. Take one more deep breath. And stay here as long as you'd like. And when you're ready, open your eyes. And then see if you can carry just a little bit of this with you. Not as another thing to do, more as a memory. More as a knowing. I do not have to earn my own life. I get to live within it.
