This Is The Reason You Feel Burnt Out

Burnout isn't about working too hard. It's about feeling like you're not getting anywhere. A serial entrepreneur explains why progress in skills, income, or goals is what actually makes work sustainable, using his own YouTube and sales experience as proof.

I have sold three businesses in the past 12 years and I work with about 400 businesses on a monthly basis in the consulting I do. And I say this because I have felt burnout and a loss of motivation more than my fair share of times over the years. And in my opinion, the loss of motivation and burnout, although those are two separate things, they both come from when you feel like you are no longer progressing. And what I mean by that is you're no longer improving your skills, your capabilities, your network, your connections, your income level, or you're not making any more tangible, tangible progress towards a concrete end goal. Because when you're making the progress, it's fun, right? It's you're on the come up, you're on your way up. And burnout and lack of a motivation are never truly a thing. An example of this is for me, when I make these YouTube videos, there are periods of time where I just kind of make them out of obligation at this point. It's not like I've been a YouTuber for 10 years or anything, but definitely six months. And I feel just compelled to keep posting on different topics. And it was a lot more fun when I first started. But I think the main reason for that is in the past few months especially, I just hammer the videos out because I have to. You know, this is one of the channels that leads to a lot of sales for my business, whether that's the 10k per month school group or the a thousand x leads program alongside ads and cold emails, of course. And when I don't post YouTube videos, you can see the sales just slowly, slowly, slowly dying about 30 to 60 days after that period where I don't post. So recently I. I've just kind of said it to everything I was doing in the past and just started making these last few videos. Especially if you've been watching my last few at the time that this video will be posted. And I think you can tell that I'm enjoying it a lot more. It's me at my best versus me just slaving away trying to make an hour or two presentation, then reading off the screen where I just kind of start with a couple bullet points that I have on the screen and talk to them as I see fit. So an example of this is just because you're posting YouTube videos every single day does not necessarily mean you're progressing unless you are getting better at every YouTube video, your lighting's getting better, your production value, your speaking on camera, your idea, the charisma and the flow of Your speech. If you're not getting better, maybe not every single video, but on a long enough timescale, like every week or every month or every quarter, every year, you're not really progressing. And then it ceases to become fun. And when it's fun, it's a lot easier to stay consistent, to get started, to come up with the best ideas and all that kind of stuff. So there are certain things where it comes with you're not progressing with your skills or on a higher level, you're not progressing towards, you know, an end goal. So if you are trying to grow your business from 1 to 5 million dollars per year within the next two years, and you kind of just lose sight of that, and you're not identifying those activities that you need to do, the infrastructure that you need to build to get there, why wouldn't you feel burnout or a loss of motivation? Of course you would, right? So I think that if you are feeling burnt out, if you are feeling a lack of motivation, I would at least suggest that first off, you don't just assume it's because you're working too long or too hard more so do it with what I'm saying here. It's kind of like sometimes when you work all day and you have a boring night, you're tired by 9pm but if you were to go out dancing with your crush, for example, you could stay up till midnight or 1am or 2am or 3am on a weeknight and never get bored and then just go to work the next day. It's kind of the same concept here, and I think it's worth a video on its own. Because burnout and lack of motivation and it not being fun is one of the most common things that I hear on a daily basis from my clients. So probably a lot of people on YouTube and people in general are feeling the same way. So I hope this is valuable. That's my take on it, and I'll see you in the next one.
