Skip the whiteboard if you want people focused on each other. Use it when you need to capture every idea. Digital sticky notes stay put, unlike physical ones that fall off.

Do we always need an online whiteboard to make an online workshop or meeting engaging? I would say it depends. The rule of thumb is that if you want participants to focus on each other and build relationships and trust, then stay away from the whiteboard. Because it's very difficult to actually multitask and to think, to speak, to be aware of each other's energy and maybe look at the facial expressions and body language and type into the keyboard and look at the Post-its at the same time. On the other hand, if the output of the conversation is important, if you don't want to miss any idea and you want everything to be stored so that you can make sense of it afterwards, then definitely use a whiteboard. The great stuff is that on online whiteboards, sticky notes don't fall off the walls.
