Structure doesn't kill spontaneity; it enables it. The speaker uses an adventure metaphor to argue that being prepared with supplies and torches lets you actually explore, get lost, or linger at a crossroads without catastrophic risk. Emergence needs a safety net.

Emergence would be letting space for deciding on a crossroad. Do we go left? Do we go right? Do we go— do we stay a bit longer somewhere? Do we sometimes follow our intuition in this route? And then that doesn't mean I don't have structure, because I have that preparedness to allow them to make those decisions or to get lost because we got some extra supplies, or to get lost and somebody, you know, and stay for the night because we got our torches. So I think there's something about the opposite of emergent being predefined plan, predefined outcome, and emergence being space to see what else comes up. And structure for me can enable both, actually. Such a good point.
