When a group wanders off topic, pause and ask if this conversation is the best use of their time. The question shifts responsibility back to them to decide whether to stay on track or pursue the new direction.

How can we get a group back on topic if they start to deviate in all different kinds of directions? And this happens especially when there is a hairy or difficult topic that feels so comfortable to avoid. So one way to get the group back is to ask them whether the things they're currently talking about are really the most important things. Snap them out. Ask, okay, I'm observing that although this was the topic of the session, now everything we're talking about is this. Is this the direction you want to go? So you're basically getting back the responsibility to the group, and then it's on them to decide. And if they think that this is the most important thing to do in this moment with their time, then it's up for them, because as a facilitator, we are there to guide the group and to be in service to them.
