When participants stay quiet, it's usually shyness or not knowing what to say. Instead of pushing them to speak, offer alternatives: typing, chat, sticky notes, pair discussions, or thinking time. Let comfort matter more than getting voices in the room.

What can we do if someone in our session doesn't want to speak? They simply don't want to say a word. Well, there can be 2 reasons. A, maybe they're just shy and they don't feel comfortable to speak in front of a large group, or they don't know what to say. So in both cases, it's important that we realize that it's not about us. If they don't want to speak, we cannot force them. Maybe we cannot make it easier for them or feel safer. Maybe they want to rather type something or they want to think first. So give them different options to contribute to the session. And maybe it doesn't mean that they have to speak up loudly. Maybe they can put it in the chat, they can fill in the sticky note, or they can share with one other person or with a group of people and they will share on their behalf. So it's not about us, what we wish, but it's about the participants, what they desire.
