DAY 3: Building a New Brand (Connecting w Manufacturing)

Nathan Miller spent day three connecting with his landlord, a manufacturing veteran who works with Method and Hims, to explore making his own product in Salt Lake City. They'll discuss minimum order quantities and whether to create a custom formula or adapt an existing one. He's moving away from importing finished goods from China toward hands-on manufacturing.

What's going on, guys? So it is day three, I believe, of creating this new brand. And today I didn't do a lot, but I wanted to talk about some more of just kind of why I'm so inspired to do something like this. I'm just. I'm super inspired because I've always, from the beginning of my life, felt like I've had this. This creative part of me that never really actually let flourish. And it's. I've seen it, like, in everything I've done. Like, I know this sounds retarded, but I've seen it in when I've played video games. I've seen it when I've played sports. I've seen it when I've done E Comm. I've seen it when I even draw doodle, when I make YouTube videos. Like, stuff like that. Like, I don't like just doing what everyone else does. I like to create. I really do like to create. And so I've really had an itch for the past few months, honestly, to create something new and create something that I actually like and something that means something to me and something that I would like to do for the next few years. And so that's kind of what is behind this new brand I'm building. And today I didn't really do too much. My family are in town. It's a Saturday, so I spent most of the day with my dad, went to the gun range, went to show them around Salt Lake City, got some food and stuff, and it was honestly a great day. But I did make a very important phone call to my landlord, who's in manufacturing. Like, he literally does the manufacturing for huge brands like Method. You'll see, you know, Method from, like, Amazon and stuff like that. And then hims, he does hems as well, which is pretty crazy. And so he knows what he's talking about. And so I kind of just ran this idea past him, and he really liked it. And he also was talking to me about, you know, where I can get manufacturing. And so he's gonna be reaching out to some people and seeing what the MOQs are, what kind of forms they can do for me, if they are able to formulate stuff for me, or if they already have formulations that maybe I could use. Preferably, I wanted my own, but we'll see. What I probably will end up doing my own or tweaking it somehow, because I want it to be mine, and then also where the manufacturing actually will be, because I live in Salt Lake City, so there is manufacturing here and there are these type of things here. And that would be super cool if I could go and get the product in person. Like I wouldn't have to wait two weeks, you know, from it for it to come to China or a week from the other side of the United States. I could just get it instantly and that would be really, really sick because you know, at scale I'll have more of a hands on in the operations of how my products is being created and I'd be able to go check it out. So that is really, really cool and something that I'm really excited about. And yeah, besides that, I've been doing a lot of honestly just thinking about what I want to call this thing and to do this I've just been looking at, you know, the exact niche that I'm targeting with this product and looking at some buzzwords that they use and some things that just make sense for what the product will actually do. What is it? If I could put the function of the product into a name that's very easy to understand and that connects with that audience that I'm trying to target, what would it be? That's basically what I'm thinking. So I'm starting to get a little bit more ideas. I'm getting somewhere, getting some traction here. But still this is something that I'm going to be taking kind of seriously. So I want it to be good. Usually when I make an econ brand I just give it a generic name and then just kind of test. But this is something that I really, really am going to get behind and put some capital behind and stuff like that. So really excited about it. But that is basically all for day three. Tomorrow won't be much either. I'll probably do a little bit work here and there, but I'll still update you guys and talk to you guys about it, about the process and stuff like that. So. But this is a lot different than like anything I've ever done. Like I want to make sure you guys know that it's very, very different. I usually source products from China. Get a product that's already made, like already has a packaging everything and then I'll sell it. But now I'm creating like creating something new, formulating something new. And so I'm really interested and interested and interested in learning and learning and learning and it's really a cool opportunity and it's scary. It's scary because I've never done this before. So like you just. There's a lot of things I don't know about, but I'm learning, and I'm really excited to share this with you guys and continue to update you guys every day. So, yeah, that's where we're at. And that's day three.
