Stop saying “I’m not creative.” You just need the right inspiration

Nathan Miller says creativity isn't a talent you're born with, it's an input problem. When you consume the same mainstream content as everyone else, you get the same ideas. Read books, watch niche creators, explore unconventional media instead.

You are creative, you just don't know how to find inspiration. So part of my job is creating content, right? And it's part of the thing I love to do. I love to create content. Ever since I was a kid, I was creating content, right? And I've started to hit a roadblock more recently, like in the past month, right? And I honestly just haven't posted really. I just haven't felt like posting because like I just didn't have— I didn't feel inspired and I didn't have that inspiration. And what I noticed and what I figured out is I wasn't doing anything different and that's why I wasn't getting inspired. What does that even mean? Well, let me tell you. So if you are doing the same thing everyone else is doing, you're watching reels, right? You're scrolling on TikTok, you're watching, you know, the same YouTube videos as everyone, you're taking in the same kind of information, you have the same, you know, diet in terms of your viewing to everyone else, you're gonna have the exact same inspiration, the same motivation. And so if you want to be unique, you want to be creative, and you want to have like cool ideas, right? Or interesting stuff that just seems like it just comes out of you from nowhere, you have to start taking in information and viewing from sources that people aren't. And so this is really easy nowadays because all you have to do is basically read books because nobody does that, uh, watch really, really niche, you know, YouTube channels or niche creators that are like very different than like the average person that someone watches your age. It can be movies, it can be all these different things. But one thing that I've noticed is I've started to do this a little bit, you know, I've been reading a little bit, I've been watching these other creators that I think are really cool but are not super well known yet, and I'm starting to feel really inspired. I'm starting to find and think of these ideas that are really cool and really interesting and really creative that I can even recreate in my own life. So if you're struggling with being creative, you— it's just an input problem. It's not an output problem.
