The real reason I wanted to be an entrepreneur

Nathan Miller read Rich Dad Poor Dad and The 4-Hour Workweek as a teenager and decided entrepreneurship was his path to freedom. He started a social media marketing agency running Facebook ads for his father's church, then pivoted to dropshipping in 2021 after realizing he hated cold-calling and wanted to use what he'd learned about advertising.

I started reading a little bit as well. I believe I read like, you know, the classics like Rich Dad Poor Dad, trying to think what was probably some Napoleon Hill books and stuff like that, you know, 5-Hour Workweek, all that stuff. Because I was so obsessed with becoming an entrepreneur. Like I knew I didn't want to go to college at this point. I didn't know what I was going to do. I was like thinking like, I don't know, real estate or something like that. Like I'd, you know, do one of those FHA loan and buy a house and like that's going to make me rich. Honestly, hindsight, that was such a naive thing to think about. But yeah, I just knew I had this feeling feeling in my heart that I wanted to be an entrepreneur, not because I wanted to be an entrepreneur, because I wanted freedom, right? I really, really wanted freedom. And I would make— started making vision boards and everything about this. And so eventually I started and tried an SMMA company, and that didn't work out. I remember my dad's actually a pastor, and I ran ads for his church, I think one time, and actually ran pretty good because they weren't like ads like to sell anything. They were just ads for engagement and to get people to show up. And it actually worked. I was like, huh, that's kind of interesting. But I tried to get a couple other businesses. I messaged them, I emailed people, never really cold called. I wasn't that into it. And so I just like, I was like, dude, I don't really want to cold call people. I don't like this business model either. And so that is the time where I was like, okay, you know, SMMA, I kind of understand a little bit better what Facebook ads do now. Like how this works, how advertising works, right? Like I see like it, you could actually get a result from it. So I was like, okay, I'm going to try to do dropshipping again. So that is when I tried to do dropshipping again. And that was probably in 2021.
