In this opening presentation, Gareth introduces himself as a seasoned entrepreneur who has experienced both successes and setbacks, largely due to hiring mistakes. He explains that his personal challenges led him to join Performia after discovering their people‑management system in 2005. Gareth outlines Performia’s scale – a Swedish‑headquartered, internationally‑operating firm present in 25 countries, with him overseeing the Asian region. He cites a client range from global giants like Toyota to tiny two‑person startups, emphasizing that hiring decisions have proportionally larger effects in smaller firms. The core message is that while technical tools and processes are well‑documented, actionable information about people and team‑building is scarce, and the session aims to fill that gap.

My name is Gareth and hopefully the next couple of hours can give you some information that will help you with building your team, with hiring staff and knowing a little bit more about people. For me personally, I've built quite some businesses, had some interesting successes some tough times, and the tough times have only been created really by, you know, not having the right staff and not always knowing exactly what I should do when it comes to handling different situations. And so that's actually why I got involved with Performia, because when I first saw this system in 2005, I realized that, you know, this information would have helped me a lot, and I would have been a lot further ahead than what I was at the time. So I got involved and decided to help a lot of other people with this information. We're an international company. We're head office in Sweden. We're in 25 different countries and I look after the Asian region. We started in 2006 and we've had pretty good success. We started Japan and we look after companies as large as Toyota and as small as one and two-man shows when they're to help them with their hiring and to build their team. And obviously the smaller the organization, the more important the hiring is. Because if you only have 2 or 3 staff and you add an extra staff member on, well now you're increasing your staff by, you know, quite a large percentage. When you're Toyota and you add 10,000 staff on, it doesn't— not as big an impact. But every organization and every business owner and every executive has the same You know, situations where either they're not sure exactly who they should bring into their organization or not so sure like who, you know, it is that's actually really contributing and who could be behind the scenes that looks good but actually a little bit destructive. And this is, you know, what we go home at night with our attention on is situations that are caused by people. And so, you know, like You know, any profession, we need to know how to use our tools and our machines and our processes, but there's not so much, you know, useful information regarding people. And so hopefully today you'll see that, you know, there is some more information out there.
