The vast majority of people don't know what they want. They don't know why they're asking for the thing that they are. And so the most helpful thing that you can do is to ask questions to help them understand why they're thinking about this the way that they are. This is a classic follow-up: how do you do this without making them feel insulted or stupid? This is a faulty belief. When you ask clarifying questions, the goal is not to ask a clarifying question to make them feel stupid. The goal is to ask a clarifying question to help them realize that they don't even know what they're saying. So it's a faulty belief to think like, if you do this, you're gonna like make them mad. No, you're gonna help them understand and make a better decision.
