This is a YouTube video titled "Become a Better a Writer with Classic Russian Literature" containing a monologue or talk from March 25, 2024, discussing the value of studying Russian literature, specifically highlighting George Saunders' book "A Swim in a Pond in the Rain" as a tool for understanding writing techniques in iconic Russian short stories to improve modern writing.
Every writer should study Russian literature. The Russians in the late 1800s, early 1900s had it figured out. And if you've never read the book A Swim in a Pond in the Rain by George Saunders, what he does is he takes some of the most iconic Russian short stories and not only breaks them down, but also points out all the little writing techniques and strategies that are happening within the text. One of my favorite things is to dig into pieces like this so that you can understand how were these iconic short stories assembled. And then you can take those building blocks and write, write something more modern with them.
