This is a YouTube video titled "Delete THIS phrase from your writing." containing a monologue or instructional talk recorded in October 2024. The speaker shares advice on improving writing by removing phrases like "I think" or "I believe" to make writing more concise and declarative, referencing a personal anecdote from college.
Delete opening I phrases, things like I think, I believe, I've learned, I conclude. I had a teacher in college who pointed this out to me, because I used it all throughout this essay, and he circled every single one. And he said, you're the author. Everything in this essay are the things that you think and you believe and you've concluded and you've learned. So you don't need to tell me. I know that these are all coming from you. And as soon as he pointed that out, it changed my writing forever. So I'm hoping to point it out here for you as well. You don't need all of these. I think, I believe, I conclude phrases. And a lot of times, when you remove them, the writing becomes more concise, the writing becomes more declarative.
