Nicolas Cole argues that writing skill isn't binary talent but a spectrum measured by how specific, objective, actionable, and instructional you can be. Most writers focus on the wrong metrics and miss what actually separates good writing from bad.
I think oftentimes we confuse, in the world of writing, we think that it's like you're either a terrible writer, there's a massive ocean, or you're a genius. That's not really what's happening. What's happening is you have varying levels of specificity, varying levels of objectivity. And so your proficiency as a writer is your ability to increase and be more specific and more objective and more actionable and more instructional to readers, especially in nonfiction.
