The speaker wrote two books and learned that publishing online first matters. Writing publicly gives you feedback on what resonates with readers, making the actual book easier to write and more likely to succeed.
This book took me four years to write, and this book took me four months to write. And do you want to guess which one has sold more copies? It's this one. And there's a very specific reason why. All throughout writing this book, I wrote every single topic that is inside on the Internet. And as I was writing this book, I hid away in my apartment in Chicago and didn't share any of it with anyone the entire time. And that made it incredibly difficult for me to figure out what was working, what wasn't. Am I telling the right stories? Are readers resonating with this? So by the time I put it out, I hadn't validated any of the ideas inside this book. Still think it's a great book, but it took me a lot longer to get there. This book was very easy to write because every single thing inside of it I had already written on the Internet in some way. I'd gotten feedback on it. I understood which topics performed the best. I already knew that everything that I was going to put in this book was something that was going to resonate with readers. So that's why one of the biggest things that we encourage new writers to do is to just start writing on the Internet.
