Is Quantity More Important Than Quality When Writing Online?

Nicolas Cole argues that publishing more than two newsletters weekly overwhelms readers. He compares a two-hour newsletter to a twenty-hour one, showing how extra time adds depth, examples, interviews, and templates. One high-quality weekly issue beats churning out many mediocre ones.

My experience with newsletters is I think that anything above 2 newsletters a week becomes very overwhelming. I think, I think it's, it's content overload for people. So I would think about more in a few different ways. One is, speaking from experience here, you will have life chapters where you're like, whoa, I have a ton of time. I feel like I could crank out so much more content. And then you'll have other chapters where you have less time and that's harder. So I would either think of, oh, I could write so much more, as could you schedule things further out? Can you like buy yourself more runway? Is one way to think about it. And then the other way to think about it is, and I mean this quite literally, like what would be the quality difference between you spending 2 hours on a newsletter versus 20 hours on a newsletter? And I don't just mean like length of the newsletter. I mean like, what is the quality of the idea? Like how much more, how many more examples could you give them? How much more advanced of a Claude skill could you build for them? This is, this is one of those heuristics that is true across the board. You hear people talk about it a lot with YouTube, which is the difference between, you know, 2 hours of prep into a YouTube video versus 20 hours of prep into a YouTube video, you're not getting, you know, twice as much distribution. Sometimes you're getting 2,000 times more distribution because the video is that much better. And so I do think that if you have excess time, it's worth asking the question, like, what is it? What does it look like to literally have the greatest newsletter on planet Earth on this topic? Just to take it to the extreme so you can see, imagine the difference between here's a newsletter, I explain to you a concept, and here's a Claude skill where you can do it. Versus here's a newsletter, I explain to you how to do it. Here's a walkthrough video showing you how to do it. Here's an interview that I did with someone walking through how they did it. Here's the quick template. If you don't want to read or watch all of this, you can just use this and quickly get to work. And here's the Claude skill. And just to overdeliver, here's a bonus that I didn't even tell you about that I put together just to overdeliver. Like, what is the value discrepancy between those two newsletters? Massive. It's massive. I'm like, "I'm only doing one a week, for sure." Yeah, and then imagine you go, "Okay, and if you did that every week?" Like, if that was the level of quality that people expected from you, it would be very hard to not create a lot of super fans. And that sort of mentality, I think, is more productive than like, How do I churn out 7 newsletters a week? You know what I mean?
Yeah, I love it. Thank you for the perspective on that. It's brilliant.
Yeah, great question.
