Nicolas Cole built a ghostwriting agency but had to drop his own writing, reading, and hobbies. Instead of chasing perfect balance, he divides life into chapters—days, weeks, months, years—each with its own priority, so you can shift focus over time without guilt.
Chapters
There will always be a trade-off. You will never have a day where you're like, "I did everything and I didn't sacrifice anything." When I was building my ghostwriting agency, my personal writing suffered a lot. I wanted to write books, I wanted to read more literature, I wanted to have hobbies, I wanted to do all sorts of things, and for years I didn't do any of them. You will always have a trade-off, and so I really encourage not so much thinking like work-life balance is how do I have everything at the same time, but it's actually extending the time horizon and going, "For this chapter of my life," which could be a day, it could be a week, it could It could be a month, it could be a year. For this chapter of my life, this is the priority. And then I can change my priorities and do something different later.
