Pick one thing.

At 25, working at an ad agency, the speaker tried to do everything at once and it didn't work. The lesson: pick one thing and focus on it instead of spreading yourself thin across multiple projects.
You are not supposed to do all of these things. All of these things are just options. I have such a distinct memory of being 25 years old, working at this ad agency for two and a half years. I hadn't figured out where this was going yet. I was writing on Quora, I was seeing a little bit of traction, but I wasn't really making other money. Like, I just was very uncertain. And I have this very distinct memory of sitting in the office and opening my journal and outlining my content strategy, because I thought, oh, I'm going to build a content strategy, and that's going to get me out of this job. And I remember building this content strategy for what am I going to post on Facebook? What am I going to post post on Instagram? What am I going to post on Twitter? What am I going to post on Snapchat? What am I going to write my weekly newsletter about? And I spent hours and hours and hours outlining this master plan of all these different things that I was going to do. And guess how many of them I did? I did none of them. And I did none of them well because I was spending so much time trying to figure out all the things that I could do rather than just doing one thing really well. And that memory haunts me because I look back on that version of myself, I'm like, you idiot, just pick one thing and just dedicate all your time to it.
