Nicolas Cole breaks book writing into layers: a 12-chapter book is 12 long-form posts, each made of five short-form posts, each made of five tweets. Instead of imagining 300 pages, you're writing 50-word snippets. The mental load drops from overwhelming to doable.
Chapters
12 chapters in a book is just 12 long-form blog posts. A long-form blog post is really just 5 short-form blog posts or atomic essays bolted together. A short-form blog post or atomic essay is really just 5 tweets stacked on top of each other. It's one of those things where writing a book is hard, but writing 1,000 tweets that get stacked up onto each other that create short-form posts that get stacked on top of each other that create long-form posts that get stacked on top of each other that become 12 chapters is not hard. And when you reframe it that way, all of a sudden you're like, oh, this is really actionable. But when someone sets out to write a book, it feels impossible because you're trying to hold 300 pages in your head, and you shouldn't do that. You should hold 50 words in your head and then stack another 50 words on top of it and then stack another 50 words on top of it.
