Nicolas Cole shares an email subject line that hit 90% open rates: "Can I give you a quick call?" in lowercase. It works because it breaks pattern, feels like a text, and asks a direct question. But the real foundation is surfacing a painful problem and proving you've solved it before.

Cold outreach is one of those things where the game is constantly changing and the game never changes. And what I mean by that is tactically little things will pop up here and there that lead to better results. For example, one of the email subject lines that we discovered absolutely crushed when we were doing cold outreach for our agency is we would email someone and the subject line was literally just, "Can I give you a quick call?" Nothing was capitalized. It looks like a messy text message. Second of all, you're like, well, who is this person? Why would they be calling me? Third, it's a question. It's not a statement. It's not like an actual subject line. It's literally like, hey, can I give you a quick call? And like, because the subject line broke so many rules of things that breaks pattern recognition, the open rate on that was like 90%. Everyone opened that email. And so tactically, you will find little things like this that work really well. Strategically though, all roads lead back to the same fundamental things, which are pointing out a problem and ideally an urgent and painful problem, leveraging credibility or experience, which is like, I achieved XYZ, I can do this for you. All cold outreach messages circle back to those two things.
