A ghostwriter breaks down the actual costs of running the business: software subscriptions, tools for outreach, and what you really need to spend money on versus what you can skip. Most expenses are optional, and the margins are surprisingly good.
What are the startup costs of becoming a premium ghostwriter? Almost nothing. Which is why it's such an incredible side hustle or even new career path. First, you don't have to spend any money on ads. So in our premium ghostwriting academy, we teach two kinds of outreach strategies using what I like to call the free consulting approach. Warm outreach, where you tap into your network. And I don't mean some Fancy Rolodex of CEOs, I mean family, friends and friends of friends, and cold outreach, where you do targeted outreach to your ideal client, which we also help you identify. Second, you don't have to spend any money on software. You can fulfill a $5,000 client using nothing but a Google Doc, which means the service you provide is effectively 100% margin, which is insane. Third, any money you do need to spend on software, the client always incurs the cost. So if you pitch someone on creating, say, an educational email course and the client needs to use ConvertKit, well, that's a cost they incur. You just do the work. I was making over $20,000 per month as a ghostwriter without spending a single dollar on software. And even when I decided to build a ghostwriting agency and I started hiring do of employees and I scaled to millions of dollars in revenue at most, we only needed to spend like a couple hundred dollars per month on software. So this is what makes ghostwriting such a lucrative side hustle or career path. It is essentially 100% margin. All it costs you is time and effort.
