Nicolas Cole ignores first pitches on purpose. He uses follow-ups as a test: if someone keeps reaching out over days or weeks, it signals they care and have the discipline he wants in collaborators. Persistence gets rewarded with a response or call, even if the original offer doesn't fit.

I don't view people following up with me as annoying. I view it as helpful. I get cold pitched all the time, 10 times a day. I kind of purposefully don't ever respond to the first message, even if something looks interesting to me. What I do is I wait to see how persistent the person is, because persistency gives me some signal into how much they actually care. If someone just sends me one message and expects me to just magically whip out my wallet, no. But if someone follows up with me for like weeks in a row, even if it's something that I'm not even fully interested in, sometimes what I'll do is I'll just respond and then ask them for a Loom or jump on a call with them just because of how persistent they were. Because business owners want to work with people who care about their business and think a lot about their business and are really persistent, really disciplined. And I don't view people following up with me or following up on multiple platforms as like desperate or annoying. I view it as, well, let's see how persistent you are. And if you're really persistent, then you know what? That's the sort of DNA and culture of person that I want to work with.
