A speaker explores early 20s syndrome, the pressure young adults feel to succeed immediately. The mindset damages your ability to be present and build skills. A mentor's advice from the speaker's early career offers a different path.
Early 20s syndrome is when you feel like everything has to get accomplished now. You have to be rich now. You have to be successful now. Every time you open your phone, every time you open Instagram, you're like, everyone else is doing it except for me. It's peak fomo. When I graduated from college, I worked at a small ad agency, and my boss and mentor used to always pull me aside whenever I'd start complaining or asking for a raise or a new fancy title. He would go, cole, man, you are really suffering with what I like to call early 20s syndrome. And early 20s syndrome is where you constantly deprive yourself of the present, thinking that you need to be further along. And the irony is, the more you focus on being further along, the less present you are. And the less present you are, the more you're depriving yourself of the ability to build skills now, which is how you ultimately get as successful as you want to get.
