A speaker explains how surrounding yourself with people who are improving accelerates your own growth. Being around the right community makes you better 10x faster than trying to improve alone.
You're just going to get better if you hang around the hoop with other people who are getting better versus if you just try and go do it by yourself. I had a mentor in Chicago who used to call it hanging around the hoop. We all want to fit in. So if the underlying feeling is I want to fit in and then you try and go do it on your own, that is a very viscerally uncomfortable feeling. But if deep down we all want to fit in and then you are part of a community where everyone is doing that thing, all of a sudden you are going to try to fit into that community, which is going to make it a lot easier to do the thing that you to do. So there's something really helpful about just being surrounded by other people. Just like I'm sure you've realized how many inflection points as being a YouTuber came from you just being friends with other YouTubers, there's this compounding effect that happens. And so for me, whenever I'm starting to get into something, the first thing I do is I look for where's the hoop? Because if I just go spend time around the hoop, I'm going to get better 10x faster than if I just try and go do it on my own.
