Breathing technique for constipation | Niraj Naik | SOMA Breath®️

Niraj Naik teaches a breathing technique for constipation: breathe through your nose, hold after exhaling until you feel air hunger, then inhale and repeat. He says the method increases CO2 and nitric oxide to stimulate digestion. Don't do it on a full stomach.

Okay. Actually, I was a little bit taken aback when I first heard and learned this technique. This actually makes a lot of sense when you have awareness of your breath and your relationship with your body. Okay, so I'm somebody who actually in the past suffered from constipation and actually I had on and off constipation, diarrhea, and it led to colitis, which was horrible. But constipation is, I would say is a symptom and also a problem that if it's not treated, can actually lead to a lot of different health issues from depression to anxiety to hypertension and other diseases such as colitis and even bowel cancer if it's not checked properly. And having healthy bowel movements and not feeling constipated is one of the best ways to actually feel relaxed and like a normal human being. So it's a good idea to get that bowel movements moving so you feel really, really comfortable and good. Okay, so how do we do it with breathing? Okay, so the technique is actually about using your breath retention, holding your breath after the exhale. So why does that help? Okay, so let me just explain to you the technique and then I'll explain how it helps. So when you breathe in through your nose, breathe out for your nose, hold your nose, you just hold your breath for as long as you can and you wait until you actually start to feel a flush sensation where you're, you're feeling a little bit uncomfortable because you've got that air hunger from holding your breath. When you take another sip in and repeat and you wait till you get that flushing feeling again, you do it. What that does is it really dramatically boosts carbon dioxide and nitric oxide within your body. And what that does is it dilates blood vessels, it gets more blood flow going to your bowels. But what it also does is it stimulates the peristaltic motion of your bowels and actually moves the food or the feces through your bowels and it starts to kick start the digestive system. Okay, so what you want to make sure you do, you don't do this when you got full belly of food, okay? Because it can actually be disruptive to your gut function and digestion. But you can do this when you're Feeling constipated? Okay, but not when you got a really full, heavy belly of food. When you're feeling constipated, give this a go and make sure you've got a toilet nearby that's handy. And you can even do this while sat on the toilet. If you're finding it's hard to go while you're sat on the toilet, you can repeat this exercise a few times until you start to find you can just release. You should also drink water, okay, because that will help loosen the bowels. Drink plenty of water if you're having issues. Remember, you know there's normal dietary advice to have decent fiber intake in your diet. Also, certain plant fibers can actually cause constipation. These are usually the root vegetables, where they have hard, like, carbohydrate layers around them, which can be hard to digest and can actually clog up the bowels. And also anxiety itself. Stress and anxiety can actually cause you to have vasoconstriction, meaning that the blood flow to that area and the peristaltic movements slow right down. Okay? So when you hold your breath.
You raise carbon dioxide, nitric oxide. You can actually calm the brain activity down, make you feel more relaxed, and then you can just release and let go. That's right.
