In this interview, Mitesh Khatri asks Paridhi Dhingra to explain her Reflection Theory, a framework for mastering relationships. Paridhi describes reflection as the way others mirror back the beliefs we hold about ourselves; negative emotions arise when we judge ourselves based on those beliefs. She illustrates the concept with personal examples (being called “ganju” and being accused of not listening). The core insight is that all negative emotions—anger, frustration, jealousy—are reflections of self‑judgment, not the other person’s fault. To clear these reflections, Paridhi outlines two practical steps: (1) honest self‑recognition of the trait or behavior highlighted by the other person, and (2) either accepting that trait as part of oneself or actively working to change it. She emphasizes using affirmations for acceptance and offers concrete language for both options. The conversation ends with a prompt to learn more about the Reflection Theory through her Relationship Mastery Course.
So, Mitesh, your Reflection Theory in Relationship Mastery is really good. Can you briefly tell us what is Reflection Theory?
So Reflection Theory goes exactly by the word reflection. You can see your reflection in a mirror, right? That's called a reflection. So whenever we meet people and let's say a person says a word to you that made you feel bad, now you feel bad not because the person said that word, But because that person is showing you in reflection that whatever they called you, you believe that about yourself, and that is why you felt bad. That's the reflection theory. So if you accept yourself the way you are, then in reflection you suddenly don't feel bad about what the other person says. Simple example is, if you are ganju like me— I love to use this example— And if you call me ganju, I don't feel bad because I don't believe there is anything wrong with my hair or the way I look. But if I also feel that there's something wrong in the way I look and I need to do something about my hair, now if somebody judges me and calls me a ganja or whatever, suddenly I feel bad because I judge myself for my looks. So I feel bad when others judge me for my looks. So I don't say that to myself. What I'd rather do is when people judge me, I get angry at them, but I'm not actually angry at them. Who am I really angry on?
Myself.
myself. That's my reflection. At the same time, if I accept it suddenly, saying, okay, I am the way I am and I'm fine the way I look, suddenly now people can continue judging me and I don't feel bad again. Because in the reflection now, I don't see lack of acceptance for myself, I don't see judgment for myself, I see acceptance. That's reflection.
So if somebody wants to accept— now I understood, okay, that I'm If I'm getting angry, then it's my reflection. Now I want to accept it. How should I accept it?
So all emotions that are negative are reflections. Anger, frustration, hate, jealousy, everything. Any emotion that you feel other people are making you feel, it's never other people making us feel anything. All emotions are reflections. Now, how do we take care of that reflection? Simple. Accept yourself the way you are. So for an example, I would use this affirmation. I accept myself the way I look. Suddenly, because there is acceptance for myself, now in reflection, that judgment, anger is gone. Another example can be, let's say, Indu says that you don't listen to me. Now, if I believe that I did not listen to her and I am guilty of that, then I will be angry at her. But actually, I'm not angry with her. Who am I angry with? Myself. I'm angry with myself. So what do I do now? Be honest with myself. Yes, I am not a good listener. I did not listen to her, and I will be a good listener now. So, 2 simple steps to clean your reflection. Think about it this way: you're looking in the mirror and you can't see that your face is clean, so you throw a stone at the mirror to, to break the mirror. There's no point breaking the mirror. It doesn't clean your face. So what do you do? You clean yourself. Now, how do you clean yourself to release those negative emotions? Step number 1: honesty. Accept saying, yes, I am this way. Now that can be I'm not a good listener, that can be I don't know how to convince people, that can be I'm not a good speaker, it can be anything. Step 1 is be honest with yourself because the only reason I'm feeling bad is because whatever the other person is telling me about me, I do believe that even 1%. So first step, be honest with myself. Second step, be willing to change or accept. One of these 2 steps. What do you mean change or accept? Now if I am like I come coming back to my Ganjo example. Now either I change it or accept it. या तो जाके विग लगा लो, या तो accept कर लो I am the way I am. दोनों steps आपके पास option है. If another example is again my wife is saying you're not a good listener. First be honest with myself. Yes, I'm not a good listener. Step two, या तो change कर लो, या तो accept कर लो. Okay, yes, I am not a good listener. So now let me work on being a good listener. Or I would say, okay, I'm going to be arrogant and say, मैं जैसा हूँ, वैसा ही हूँ. Now if that makes you feel good, do that. But you only have two options after you are honest with yourself: either you accept it or you change it. Choice is yours.
