8 Changemakers Escaped to the Forest to Confront the Meta-Crisis - Here’s what happened.

Eight changemakers spent three days in a Bali forest exploring what they call the meta-crisis: climate collapse, ecological breakdown, and societal failure. They designed a regenerative island ecosystem using a multi-capital framework and a concept called epic sprouting, the moment before collective breakthrough. They'll coordinate through a shared digital hub to pool resources and skills.
Chapters
Last weekend, eight experienced change makers gathered in a remote forest sanctuary in the mountains of Bali to reflect on the challenges we collectively are facing.
So that's the choice. Like that's the evolutionary choice. Go extinct or we build a new humanity.
Yeah. And nothing.
There's really no. There's like you live or die. It's pretty fucking 01.
We explored how we are called to respond to this inflection point in our collective journey.
How can we build an ecosystem that works in the premise of Bali and bringing together Bali changemakers?
How do we actually regenerate the health of the island and create a showcase that's inside the context of global systemic meta crisis like full climate collapse?
The answer we arrived at after three intense days of questioning, strategizing and praying is written on this sheet of paper. It's something that we don't see out there, neither here on the island nor on a global scale. But embracing it requires us to face our own fears and shadows.
I don't know because then people do this, you know, and then it's. I'm not interested to be on a pedestal or be knocked down off of a pedestal. And I kind of like to be in the background and just, you know, supporting us.
But that's the beauty of a group like this. There's always someone to remind us who we need to become for this gargantuan mission.
I want to honor you for just kind of catching me in that moment of like self deflection. Yeah.
Step, step. There's a word in German that is very, very difficult to transl. It's called aufborchtemung. Maybe speaks there in German but you didn't knew the word. But it's. It's a feeling of like the anticipation of something new that wants to be birthed. That is exciting. That is like I would say quietly knocking on the door and at the same time fully present.
And this ultimately leads into a school of thought.
We're making a heart.
Yeah. Because if there's a lot of people holding a practice that creates a culture.
Yeah.
And that's how we 10x.
Yeah. Right.
Is we can only do that if there's a social more that's really strong established. So unless there's an urgency. But that can't be out of fear. I mean it's fear inducing. But you have to have enough inner practice to handle like we. If we don't get our together, everyone dies. Like literally.
And to see this as an urgency. Everybody dies. And my word here as well of like something.
Can we spell that out.
Of course, we can all die. And at the same time, something even more beautiful than ever existed can emerge.
Yeah. Yeah. And so that's the choice. Like, that's the evolutionary choice. We go extinct or we build a new humanity.
Yeah. And nothing.
There's really no. No, there's like, you live or die. It's pretty zero. Because in order to hold the weight of like, we're all gonna die or we're all gonna evolve or die. Evolve or die is our context. Then you really. It's really helpful to have these practices to get us outside of the fear complex that's embedded in death.
Yeah. And at the same time be able to access the enormous upside that is there right now to be capable of.
Like, so could that. That's kind of like hope, maybe. Like, there's the hope. Gestalt is often called. I don't really like the word hope.
As much in this context. Like, hope is not quite the right word. Yeah.
It's the springing out of something, the sprouting of something great.
Of course it's already there.
Yeah, but that's what you mean, Right.
What are you trying to find?
I'm just trying to find an English alternative word that I can pronounce.
The epic sprouting.
The epic sprouting. I love it. Sprouting.
That's fantastic. With the epic sprouting or extinction. That'd be awesome. Sprouting. I. I'm like super on board with. I'm going to write that down.
I like that. Where's the jungle? Is the jungle in the trees? Is it in the soil? Is it in the insects? Is it in the reptiles? Where's the jungle? It's in the relationships. What we are looking at here is a field that is not within you. Within you. Within you. That is not a table. It's. It's not. It's not a tangible thing, but it's like a field that impacts every component, every human being, every organization. And to create, to. To span this. This field, I think, is what we.
Are looking at inside the agreement, reality field. I think it's well understood that it's a collaboration issue. And our collaboration right now is based on murdering the planet.
Yeah.
Like this is the nature of our economy and ourselves and ourselves. Like poison ourselves. We poison the planet in order to get ahead.
Yeah.
So that's whacked. So then what do we do? That creates economic alternatives. And if we can create economic alternatives, examples could be capital pooling or just like the most basic economic alternative is we incentivize giving business to people who are doing good.
Yeah.
That's like a base. Base baseline. If you're building awesome machines, let's get your company a lot more money. So then that leads us. Okay, to like, then what do we do locally? Because we have an island which is a pretty awesome size to actually get something going.
Yeah.
But then what are the first steps for enhanced coordination.
Yeah.
And I think that's sharing your gifts.
And needs.
So that we can easily do today this specific. And then that leads into like. Okay, how do we scale enhanced coordination gifts and needs just amongst our extended network, which is epic. Here.
Enjoy.
Is this your first time to wear this? Okay. Working. Thank you so much for our inauguration ceremony. The temple here at NISA got built recently and before we will invite more and more people to this place. Of course, we want to make sure that we are in alignment with the spirits and we have our ceremony today. I'm very excited for that. The group process so far, very happy with that. We mapped what could be the highest and best use of all our time together. People that are coming here together at nysa, they are leaders in all their respective fields. And they all bring in one puzzle piece of the bigger tapestry of custodianship that we want to nourish and that we want to bring into the world. And the question how these puzzle pieces can perfectly click into each other so that one plus one equals 11. That's definitely the intention of our shared time here together. How do you feel, Mr. David? I feel. I feel inspired. Nice. You feel off post among two. I feel. I feel a lot of nice of Epic sprouting. Epic sprouting. This will be the. The motto of this week. I would like to introduce like one lens that could be powerful from. From permaculture, the multi capital lens. Because when we think about capital, we always think about money. But money is just one form of capital. For all the projects, all the people immersed in this whole field of custodianship to increase their capacity to attract capital. But capital on all levels, like, of course, financial capital plays a role. Social capital, human capital, intellectual capital, manufactured capital, natural capital. I think this. I see this as an underlying current of almost everything to increase the capacity of. Make more capital out of less capital. On all these six, on all these six levels. Some people will have an abundance of financial capital because they built a business in the past and they have this at their disposal. Other people have a lack of financial capital. Some people have like, oh, wow, I'm currently lacking the big important innovation that I need in order to make my operations more efficient. I have a lack on the intellectual capital. Okay, how can we find somebody within the ecosystem who has exactly this kind of, kind of expertise? I think what would be an incredible catalyst for like the whole ecosystem would be a mechanism. I don't know if that's AI, if that's a human being, if that's like something in between where exactly you as a person with all your gifts and all your needs can enter. And the whatever the mechanism is, is like, ah, talk to this person because they know the people that you want to hire. Ah, talk to this person because they actually are focused on therapy based on your individual trauma. I think to facilitate this form of collaboration and to make this is, this is what is for me behind this question. What might become possible if Bali's change makers across industries and disciplines stepped into radical unified collaboration? And I think this is not just a we want this but actually it needs a sophisticated mechanism how to, how to bring this into reality.
Do you think it will be useful to go around what do you need in terms of this, like multi capital.
Then we started on that, didn't we?
Financial.
What do you need specifically? Human social. Because like we, we don't know exactly what you need.
I love the idea. And at the same time like how can we, how can we funnel that into a system, not just share it in the round and then it's like gone. But how, how would we, how would we capture that?
One way we could capture that data is record ourselves and just have this being streaming right into a GPT agent or bottom and we could just speak these out and this automatically types it for us. Then we just ask it to convert into a spreadsheet. So no one has a chance to type right now.
Yeah, I think like coming back to your proposal, I think what would be very valuable tomorrow if there will be all eight of us to do like the first round of everybody takes 20 minutes to reflect on where, what are my needs? And all of these six capitals. And then we have a system in place where this directly can get funneled in.
I think on top of that it's not just what do you need? What, what do I need? But what can I gift, what can I provide? So there's a spirit of reciprocity.
If there's a membership business model, then everyone has to put in financial capital to, to buy in. So it's like, okay, cool. Well that like that's already a big thing.
That's capital pooling already.
So it's like, okay, if you say, okay, here's an event, and we're going to put an upcharge on the event, and we say this part of the coming to an event is your access into this network that works for a limited period. Okay. In the beginning, then you've now paid to access. That's your, you know, your donation to come in. Then. Then there's capital. Start the system going. And then there could be an annual membership where then again, if it's not, it provides you enough value, why put the membership in? But if you can gain equity and get a dividend out of the capitalization, when it decentralizes this.
Yeah. If we really just want to get it going, I believe that we just need no complexity at all. Like, we just need, like 10, 15, whatever, cool people. Yeah, and put it in.
And Google Sheet, man.
Yeah, like. Like this, you know, Google Sheet, WhatsApp group.
And then Stuart, like, the. The main custodians to jump start the project. He needs you guys. Yeah, to jump start it, to care and get your business model to care.
So then you do it and, like, start without a business model at all. Like, it's not, you know, like, just build the connection and let's see what's coming from there.
I think we want to make sure you're Bali, so it has to be.
Validation who's coming. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So good to see you.
So good to be here.
All right. That almost concludes our first day of our Bali Change Maker gathering, which went so, so well. There's so much execution energy. How can we enable more effective collaboration? We feel that there are many beautiful projects and many, like, great people with beautiful values who are doing their things, but the ties between each other are not very strong. Like, people know each other, but they are not working together. They're not collaborating effectively on all the six capitals. How can we, in all of these realms deepen the ties that we have in order to raise the playing field for everybody involved and to develop a system where this is not something like we do, like, spontaneously here and there, but really, really, really form this. This coherent network that is with all of us, even after gatherings like these end. And we made beautiful progress on that, and now we're gonna enjoy a dream journey from Livy, to let all of that sink into our subconscious and to integrate all of that. And very looking forward to the journey and to be surprised by what wants to emerge there. Beautiful first day. Very happy here at nisa, bringing all these people together. Sam.
I'm very curious about Each person's experience. But I'm gonna let you keep it inside so that you can let it sprout aufburgstermung inside of you. In your dreams tonight, beautiful. Of course I wish you sweet dreams. He's 90% there.
Good morning.
Good morning. Good morning. Are you just going to the lake?
We're going to jump in. No.
Are you ready? Let's do it. Let's do it. I already did. Already did a little workout in the tent but because I knew like Sam, you did it.
What a plate.
First win of the day. Good morning and welcome to our second day of our beautiful event event. We have three more change makers joining and we're going to onboard them in the beginning, show them what we already created yesterday and take the next steps towards weaving the network. If we actually realized what all the small and large invitations for co creation are and create a system where those can be accessed, then we could up level the playing field for all of us. Super excited for that. So let's dive in. What are you excited for today, Dan? Doing the next steps in building the ecosystem, like really getting tactical, getting clear on what, how we can build the first synergies and like bring the first gifts and eats together. Yeah. That's what I'm excited about. And the sun. Let's do it. The spreadsheet wants to be completed. Yeah. Nice.
But first breakfast.
All good? Yeah. Good drive.
Better than last night.
Yeah. Good. You just missed our river plunge. But maybe tomorrow morning.
Maybe tomorrow.
Welcome to our new beautiful arriving people.
I've seen a big one. For me it's nice to come to.
A different place from working in a.
Factory, having deadlines and everything you have to meet and work hard to achieve and then to have a weekend where.
It'S like very open and you can.
Just kind of not look at the time.
You want to give a little intro of the day.
I'm sorry. So yesterday we had a very free and open introduction to what we could do for the Nexus. And it came down to how can we build or rebuild an ecosystem that works in the premise of Bali and bringing together Bali change makers and Bali based movers and shakers to come together to build an ecosystem that is one of understanding needs and being able to voice those needs. A platform where everybody also gets seen and one where we all share.
What.
We need and can provide in terms of capital. Maybe Dakota. You want to talk about where we went from there?
Yeah.
One of the analogies that was really helping me yesterday is that when you're structuring water most effectively. You move it through the double impaler. So you take water, you start to structure it and the spirals and it comes into this implosion point. And one of the things we're thinking about, kind of an analogy is that there's like the core, there's this container that's holding different forces of people who are coming in. And as these people, as the forces come in, there's a point of implosion of like heart centered connection where there's enough trust that there's a spark created that then leads to an out explosive energy of how can we actually support and help each other. And so this context to this North Star, like how does Bali become a showcase regenerative island in and then what are the filtrations of? There's many different networks and economies in Bali. Not all are focused on how do we actually regenerate the health of the island and create a showcase that's inside the context of global systemic meta crisis like full climate collapse. And then inside of that as filtration. If you're aware of the context that we live in and are excited about the journey of the beginning of a journey to rebalance the global ecosystem, but done on an island wide scale, this becomes a filtration system that we funnel people into a container and then find ways that we can support each other in an ongoing fashion such that we can build a rooted regenerative economy. The economics are currently insane and fully stacked on consuming the planet and converting it to option tokens and outsourcing all the true cost to the public. So one of the things we got into is like what are the systems that we can employ so that we can continue to build economy amongst a collective group who really has this, this at heart, which is the excitement of our favorite German word.
It says Aufbruck Stimung, which means the epic. There's no direct translation into English, but we've figured out that it means the epic sprouting. That's the closest that comes to like the. The point before the epic journey begins.
Okay, this is.
Now we all have various businesses and we're all doing really cool things. At the core is like how do we create an ecosystem that's super resilient? And what's that term gets stronger as more pressure is put on it.
Antifragile.
Antifragile. So if we've antifragile thriving life system in the middle, then if we can collectivize our finances to a certain degree such that we can find opportunities collectively and then Fund those, give those opportunities, full stack empowerment. Then we're. Because there's lots of things that we can easily finance and get go to market. Market share established relatively easily with just like 50 well coordinated people.
I pretty sure that we all can see like this, this highest, highest version of the ecosystem, which is like in capital pooling and stuff like that. And what we were going with is like how to make that step from zero to one. Yeah.
I was used to being a CEO whisperer and I worked for this guy.
Well, he.
I don't know who worked for who, but he was the founder of Lululemon. To uproot humanity from mediocrity was, was the mission. That was his personal mission that became the company mission. It was like he was like this like kind of big guy. It was always kind of mediocre. And he always wanted to be excellent and just wanted to come not be like that when he grew up. And so that became the mission. And then, so then as a mission, we put that at the center of the company. And then every expression of that company to this day is an expression of that statement or his purpose, his dharma. Everything in that whole company is by design and it's by that thing that we came up with. So when we talk about.
Yeah.
So that everyone in the whole company gets excited every time they express that.
You know.
And so as a collective, if we had some kind of core purpose, which I think you've already done, but maybe we give it a word or two.
It seems to me that we have like two different levels. We have the level of like the, I would say the outcome, the thriving and so on. And then like we have the path which like for me, custodianship, being of service is more like the path is like the, the vehicle that in the end creates thriving life, thriving, Gaia, whatever we call it, I would say I.
Want to leave here knowing my batteries are recharged for the mission ahead. That's the kind of feeling I get in my body.
When you think about thriving. Most people think about something they, they want to take. Like, I need the relaxing bathtub and I need the self care and I needed this and I need more money and whatever. But I, I would propose thriving through custodianship because I think like for me personally, this is the path and this is the path that we need to walk. Like collectively, we thrive more the more we are of service. And being of service doesn't mean that I have less, but actually I have more because I fulfill my. My.
What I like about that is like it. It relates that you thrive more by caring.
Yeah.
And that's like what we want to show, economically speaking. If you do the right thing, you actually make more money.
That's the thing. Sa Sam, I feel like your whole journey with creating the fashion label and like, you, you have this component of really, really being hands on and wanting to produce something tangible and artsy and so on. And on the other hand, I feel this very strong, strong voice that wants to go into the world and impact transformation and women and people in general. And I see you as a, like on the big stage in front of thousands of people and bringing your message into the world. And I, I feel these two, two sides.
I don't know if that is. It's a lot to be. Because then people do this, you know, and then it's. I'm not interested to be on a pedestal or be knocked down off of a pedestal in terms of holding for, you know, to speak to an audience in that way. I kind of like to be in the background and just, you know, supporting.
I think you are very, you're very clear, very straightforward, very, very in your face. And I think this is. No, I think this is one of your, one of your biggest gifts because it can like, unearth everything that's not working. Yes, I feel that. Yeah, please, let's put this more out.
But I hear you. You're not the only one that said that. Yeah, even mentors say that. Leadership. The minute I get into that, like, I'll quit or I'll turn around or it's like, oh, just.
But why?
I think because. Because I'm so confrontational. Confrontational. Like it's, it's confronting to have people like, be mirrored on, like, what. Where your work needs to go.
Right.
And, and then people take it so personal also because I have an energy of like being motherly even before having kids, you know, so it's like people will come get the, get the information, but then it's like they avoid their mother, you know, and it's like.
But I think that's the beauty. You bring these two together, you can be like. And at the same time, you can be like this. And I think if you bring these two together, people will be able to take it really well because they, they sense that it's coming from a loving heart. And at the same time it's like, it's like the tough love of like, hey, I love you. And at the same time, this is shitty. Change that. And I think it's the time to Own that because it's a huge gift. Of course it can create a lot of destruction. But since you have this mothering quality as well, I think you're able to weave these two together and use this as an incredibly potent force that brings the quality that we are talking about the whole time into the world. And to confront people with, hey, this is not working, neither for you, nor for the planet, nor for anybody.
I want to honor you for just kind of catching me in that moment of self deflection and that spark of inspiration to. Yeah. Step up, what am I waiting for? Kind of thing. And to be vulnerable and. Okay. To be in that intense intimacy of being seen. And I'm not going to be everybody's cup of tea, but the pot will be brewing.
Yes. Slogan. Please post that.
But yeah, so thank you. Thank you so much for that, like, really truly. Because I know it's your. It was your spirit just calling me out on like my spirit hiding. So, yeah. And so what I want to harvest more is filling up my cup and I think what kind of holds me back is this like this deep, deep rooted of not enoughness. You know, like there's still more work that needs to be developed. There's still the trigger that I need to like, mend. There's like this chronic, like healing, you know, that I feel like we can. I mean, for me, I can really indulge in that. Not to say victimization, but it's is like, you know, who am I not to. But who are you also not to?
For me, the most powerful moment was actually during the first night's meditation when Livi said, imagine you're looking into the mirror and you see yourself in the next five years. I remember feeling like this kind of like kindness that my future self felt for like the hard work of, of my current self. So that was really powerful feeling that I haven't felt before. And yeah, I think I want to continue like having that practice of like, okay, can I imagine myself five years later or five years before to have that like, outside perspective of like what life currently is? Because sometimes like you said, like, we're like this, you know. Yeah, that was a really special moment for me. And then the other things too, that I think is quite valuable is to.
Me, all of you. Sa Sam Official Bali Changemakers gathering is coming to an end. You saw a lot of impressions. It was a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful journey. Everybody's leaving refreshed, invigorated, inspired. Right, right. So, yeah, we'll continue that next month will be the next one. We're going to continue to weave the network even while we're not present all here. But of course, the long term goal is to build a full regenerative village where people like these can live together full time in one place and everything that matters to us can flow. Yes, one step at a time. Thank you for following along on the journey and see you in the next video and maybe on site here at NISA Link all further details on how to join us here in the description. See you guys. Bye bye.
