In this instructional video, Ayurvedic practitioner and yoga teacher Salima Sukumaran presents five simple, low‑cost daily rituals that aim to improve skin health and mental calmness by aligning daily habits with Ayurvedic principles. She explains how skin reflects internal digestion, nervous tension, and lifestyle, then walks through each practice: (1) morning tongue scraping to remove ama and support digestion; (2) Abhyanga self‑massage with warm sesame or almond oil to stimulate lymphatic drainage, lower cortisol, and nourish the skin; (3) an ubtan body mask made from mung bean flour, turmeric, and rose or sesame water for gentle exfoliation and glow; (4) a mindful midday meal timed to the body's digestive fire (Agni) with warm, cooked foods and digestive spices; and (5) a nightly foot massage with oil to calm the nervous system and promote deep sleep for skin repair. Throughout, she offers dosha‑specific tips (e.g., oil choice), explains physiological mechanisms, and encourages viewers to try the routine for a week, promising noticeable improvements in skin softness, breath, and overall wellbeing. The video concludes with a call to like, share, subscribe, and consult the description for personalized dosha‑based skincare guidance.

Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt like your skin looked tired even when you were eating well or sleeping enough? Or do you feel stress and heaviness in your chest and you see it in your face? This is not just in your mind. According to Ayurveda, your skin reveals what makeup cannot conceal. It reflects how your digestion works, how your nerves are holding tension, and how your daily habits support or stress your system. Today I will share 5 simple Ayurvedic rituals that will help your skin glow from the inside. And give your mind a sense of peace. These are easy to do at home, and you don't need expensive products or overly complicated routines. Just a little rhythm, warmth, and attention. For those who are new, I am Salila Sukumaran, a generational Ayurveda practitioner and yoga teacher based in sunny California, and I'm here to help you return to the natural wisdom of our ancestors. Activate your AI, your Ayurvedic intelligence, and get your body back to juicy, glowy health. So let's begin. Ritual number 1 is morning tongue scraping or detoxing before you swallow any food. Every morning when you wake up, you may notice a white coating on your tongue, and that's ama, undigested waste matter your body metabolized overnight. If you drink water before removing it, you push those toxins back inside your body. And here's the Ayurvedic way: use a copper or silver tongue scraper. After brushing your teeth, hold the scraper, place it on the back of your tongue, and gently pull forward. Do this 5 to 7 times and then rinse very well. This simple ritual removes toxins, improves taste, freshens your breath, most importantly clears space for better digestion. When your digestion improves, your skin looks better too. It takes only 30 seconds, but it makes a huge impact on your skin and your gut health. And it has a heart health connection which most people don't know about. That will require an entirely different video. Ritual 2 is Abhyanga self-massage with warm oil. This is one of the most beautiful rituals in Ayurveda and my personal favorite. Abhyanga means massaging your body with warm oil. It nourishes your skin, it calms your nerves, and it moves lymph, which is like the body's natural detox system. If blood is like the front-end plumbing system of the body, lymph is the back-end gray water drainage system of the body. Would you live in a house where the flush was broken? Sadly, 90% of people live in bodies where the lymphatic drainage is broken. Do you notice anyone with like puffy eyes, aching swollen joints, brain fog, cellulite, swollen armpits, muscle stiffness, fatigue, and bloating? These are all signs of poor lymphatic drainage. Here's how to get it back to unstuck and flowing. In the morning before your shower, warm 2 to 3 tablespoons of sesame oil for most people, or almond oil if you're a Pitta. That oil should feel cozy, not hot. Apply that oil on your whole body. Use long strokes on your arms and your legs and small circles in your joints and your belly. Massage your neck, your chest, your feet, even your ears. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then take a warm shower. Don't scrub too hard. Let that oil nourish your skin. You can avoid soap as the oil acts as a mild cleanser as well. This daily massage will improve your blood flow, reduce dryness and aging signs, and this will leave your skin soft and radiant. It also lowers cortisol, the stress hormones, and will make you help feel grounded throughout the day. The name of the skin in Sanskrit is Twaak, which is that which needs to be touched for us to be healthy. The more we touch our skin through self-massage, the healthier the rest of the body and the mind becomes. Let's talk about Ritual 3, Ubtan Body Mask, which is for cleansing and glowing naturally. Instead of using harsh soaps or face washes, Ayurveda recommends a simple herbal powder called as ubtan. Ubtan cleans the skin gently and removes dead cells and brings out your natural glow without drying your face. And here is the classic version that has been used for as long as Indian civilization has existed. Mix about half a cup of green mung bean flour, a pinch of turmeric, and enough rose water or ground sesame powder if you're dry skin, Vata type like me. Make a soft paste, apply it on your body, let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes, then gently rub it in circles and wash it with warm water. Do this 2 to 3 times a week. It reduces acne, improves texture, and gives a smooth, healthy glow to your skin. Turmeric will also help with scars and pigmentation. This is a mask, cleanser, medicine, and exfoliant. It's 100% natural. No chemicals, no side effects. Even my diabetic and cancer patients love this formula for getting their skin back to health. Ritual number 4 is midday mindful meal, feeding your skin from the inside out. Your lunch is your most powerful skincare product if you treat it well. According to Ayurveda, your digestive fire, called as Agni, is the strongest between 4 hours after sunrise, roughly around 10 to 2 PM, and that's when you should eat your biggest meal. And here's how to do it. Sit down in a quiet place and put away your phone or your laptop and eat slowly. Your food should be warm, freshly cooked, and made with love. A simple plate of whole grains, lentils, and 3 to 5 vegetables cooked with organic cold-pressed oils and digestive spices. That's perfect. Avoid cold food, packaged snacks, or drinking cold water during your meal. This kills your digestive fire. Instead, sip on a digestive tea made with spices like cardamom, dry ginger, black cumin, black seeds, coriander, fenugreek, licorice, etc. When your digestion is strong, your body absorbs nutrients better, and that nourishment shows up on your skin as tejas or glow. No glow comes from outside creams if your digestion, your inner fire, is not working. Ritual number 5 is a foot massage at night. This will help you sleep calmly and will calm your skin. What happens during sleep is just as important as what you do during the daytime, and one of the easiest ways to sleep better and to help your skin repair is massaging your feet before bed. And here's how to do it: take 1 to 2 teaspoons of sesame oil or almond oil Rub it onto the soles of your feet. Massage for 2 to 3 minutes until it feels warm and relaxed. This simple act calms your nervous system and brings your energy down from the head to the ground, helping you ground and helping you with your sleep. And when you sleep deeply, your skin repairs itself naturally. You wake up looking more rested and radiant, even without makeup. Do this every night and you will see the difference, I promise. So those were the 5 daily rituals. Simple, natural, and rooted in time-tested Ayurvedic generational wisdom. They were not trends. They don't require expensive products or hours of your time. Just a few quiet moments to care for yourself with intention. Because in Ayurveda, Beauty is not something you chase. It's something that returns when your body feels safe, your digestion is steady, and your mind is calm. Try these rituals for one week, just one week, and watch how your skin softens, how your breath deepens, how you feel more at home in your body. It will be astounding.
