In this video, Ayurveda educator Salila Sukumaran presents the ancient Vedic protection mantra attributed to Acharya Shushruta (circa 1000 BC). She first introduces herself and her credentials, then provides an English translation of the mantra, explaining its extensive protective invocations of Brahma, various deities, celestial bodies, natural elements, and body guardians. The translation outlines how each entity safeguards specific bodily functions, senses, and aspects of life, promising warding off evil spirits, disease, and granting long life. Sukumaran attributes the translation to Dr. Valliathan and emphasizes the mantra’s power to destroy ailments and malevolent forces. She then chants the full Sanskrit text of the mantra, concluding with a brief closing phrase. The content serves both devotional and instructional purposes, offering viewers a complete rendition of the mantra for personal protection and wellness.

Hello everybody. Today I'm going to read you the protection mantra from Acharya Shushruta, who was born sometime around 1000 BC. This is a Vedic mantra. I will first read the English translation and then read the Sanskrit chanting. My name is Salila Sukumaran, and I am an Ayurveda educator and an Ayurveda wellness travel advisor based in Mountain View, California. Thank you for watching this. The meaning of the Shushruta mantra for protection is: Permit me, O Lord Brahma, to offer this prayer for warding off the evil spell of rakshasas. May Brahma and other gods annihilate the nagas, pishachas, kandharvas, pitru, yaksha, and rakshasas who have violated you. May the spirits who roam during the night and day everywhere, in the houses, in the sky, on the earth, and in all quarters, protect you. May the holy sages among Brahmanas and Kshatriyas, the mountains, the rivers, and the oceans protect you. May Agni guard your tongue and Vayu your prana. May Soma guard your vayana and Parjanya your apana. May Vidur guard your udana and the grace of Parjanya your samana. May Indra preserve your strength and Manu your intellect. And your neck. May Gadha Gandharvas protect your faculty of desire, and may Indra your strength of mind. May Varuna guard your intellect, and the ocean your navel region. May Surya protect your eyes, and the guardians of the quarters of earth your ears. Chandra your mind, and the stars your complexion, and the night your shadow. May the waters augment your sexual vigour, the herbs your hair, the sky your body, and the earth your body channels. May the Vaishvanara watch over your head and Vishnu your prowess. May Purushottama promote your manliness, may Brahma yourself and Dhruva your eyebrows. May the gods who reside in your body protect you always and grant you long life. May Lord Brahma's grace be upon you and all the gods, the moon, the sun, Narada, the mountains, the fire, wind, and the companion gods of Indra. May Lord Brahma's beneficent protection give you long life. May natural calamities subside, and may you be free from ailments and sorrows. Be assured, my child, you are now protected and your long life assured by the power of this Vedic mantra. Chanted by me, which destroys all diseases and the murderous dance of evil spirits. And now I will chant the mantra in Sanskrit. That was a translation by Dr. Valliathan.
